Community Working Groups (CWG) Meeting UROC Wednesday, December 17, 2014 Neighborhood Concerns Density & mixed uses are they possible/practical or supported here? Access to the west is problematic Station Identity Stop at the station and be greeted by the park Access to the park (to/from regional systems for parks & transit) Focus on park identity o Rename to the Theodore Wirth Park Station o Needs clear sightlines & access to the station o Move station to north for this to happen well o Art should be related to activities in the park o Provide for kiss & ride & 2 busses (slightly more than now) Complementary to GVR station (different purposes) Unique station in the system Golden Valley Road Station Area Assets Location is attractive to people with its suburban feel and city access More people work in Golden Valley than live there busy in the day, quiet at night Douglas Drive will be reconstructed many employers in this corridor People are passionate about recreation and the environment People are engaged and turnout What we agree upon Project should lead with trail discussion Golden Valley Road is in poor shape and is not well maintained Development areas should be made clear that they are to be privately driven and not led by Met Council, Hennepin County, or the City Need holistic plan that connects everything together Need better transit connections to the station Identity Neighborhood could have Bryn Mawr feel Create an active neighborhood Lead with identification with the environment & recreation High quality bike trails/public realm

Community Working Groups (CWG) Meeting UROC Wednesday, December 17, 2014 Facilitator Notes (Detailed) Bottineau Community Working Group Meeting 12/17/14 The following detailed notes were provided by the facilitators for discussions for the Penn Avenue and Van While Boulevard station tables. Van White Station Area Comments/Observations about the November Open House Heritage Park residents had a lot of interest, especially in the retail that is being proposed for the Van White Station area. People were not as informed and didn t know what to do. Great turnout People from Summit Academy were adamant about not changing their site People want property closer to Van White developed Summit Academy is an anchor institution in the area, and we d like to see them stay Maps with overlays of new development are sometimes scary for people to see because they feel like decisions were made without them (maps with future options and building massing) People don t like the idea of having a school on the 400 block of Bryant Ave N People thought 555 Girard Terrace N would be the best place for intense development (mixed use of some type) Heritage Park residents would like to see retail Greatest Assets in Station Area We need to think about What is the emerging identity of the area? Vacant land to be developed Zoning for more than single family housing No known opposition from area residents for development South of Hwy 55

Density Wants: economic development, commercial development, housing We need to think about What are the highest retail needs here? Needs: restaurants Vision: something mixed and not big box, that contributes to local business development Business incubator in the area city can help facilitate this on publicly-owned land Identity for Station Area Has to reflect the people 3 neighborhood associations intersect in this area (Heritage Park, Harrison, NRRC) Penn Avenue Station Area Greatest Assets in Station Area Potential link to Harrison and Near North through development **It will be important to think about managing traffic in this area with different modes of transit coming together here What can people agree on? Neighborhood retail is needed Some density, but make sure it fits in with the existing neighborhood Safer pedestrian access and crossings

Community Working Groups (CWG) Meeting UROC Wednesday, December 17, 2014 Better sidewalks Other options for pedestrian crossings Too tall of buildings could create a barrier effect here Retail is strongly desired and parking has to be considered There needs to be a strong connection between here and Glenwood Ave Add pedestrian-scale lighting Concept #3 has the neighborhood streets connecting to Hwy 55, which creates more neighborhood connectivity Identity for Station Area Like a no man s land now There are historical aspects here, such as the Floyd B. Olson statue, and the totem poles Green space on Hwy 55 gives the area a slight parkway feel More public art could be added that reflects the architecture of the area Additional Comments from the overall meeting (not directly connected to a specific station area) Some people wouldn t mind if there were separate meeting for the different station areas since they notice that the stations are starting to diverge Some didn t like the idea stated in the bullet point above, because they want to know what is happening with the other station areas and how each one can complement each other
