7 Project Goals & Objectives Transform the corridor, improving the visual and aesthetic qualities of the gateway, improve bike and pedestrian facilities, and enhancing a sense of entry/arrival to the Town and Village. Connect to the waterfront, Lake George Battlegrounds, Warren County Bikeway, Prospect Mountain Veterans Memorial Highway, the new Westbrook Conservation Park. Create a Gateway enhancements (signage, landscaping, informational kiosks) and streetscape features (landscaping, texture pavements, street furniture) will also be examined.

16 Why?- Safety Benefits Simply adding sidewalks along roadways can reduce pedestrian accidents by as much as 88 percent. Features such as crosswalks, pedestrian islands, and medians may reduce pedestrian related crashes by 46 percent and motor vehicle crashes by up to 39 percent. Source: Federal Highway Administration 16

17 Why?- Economic Benefits On average, increases in walkability may add $9 per square foot to annual office rents, $7 per square foot to retail rents, more than $300 per month to apartment rents and nearly $82 per square foot to home values. Completion of the Exit 18 corridor reconstruction project, particularly installation of a new traffic light at the intersection of Pine and Main streets, has drastically increased the marketability for commercial development of property along the (Post Star). An improvement of a neighborhood s walkability was associated with an increase in value ranging from $700 to $3,000 depending on the market.
