1 Executive Summary ELECTRICAL EXISTING CONDITIONS AND DESIGN ANALYSIS Sara Lappano Ltg./Elec. Corron Cultural Center Middletown, VA Faculty Advisor: Dr. Moeck As in the prior lighting technical assignment, the delay in design for this building made it impossible to conduct a detailed electrical analysis of the systems simply because they have not been designed yet. A single line diagram and mechanical schedule from a similar theater project were available, so these were used as a reference for what the actual design will be. Because there are no panelboard schedules showing how equipment and spaces are grouped together, example calculations were performed in lieu of actual comparisons to the existing design.
2 ELECTRICAL EXISTING CONDITIONS AND DESIGN ANALYSIS Sara Lappano Ltg./Elec. Corron Cultural Center Middletown, VA Faculty Advisor: Dr. Moeck Single Line Diagram: See attached. The single line diagram given in this report is a system similar to the one that is being designed. However, it is not the actual single line diagram for the project. One noticeable difference is that the power service is being supplied at 34.5kV rather than the 12.5kV that is actually being used. Despite small differences like this, the layout of the system is similar to the one being designed. System Type: Radial: All building power is served through one primary feeder and one transformer. Building Utilization Voltage: 208/120 V, 3 phase, 4 wire Transformer Configuration: Transformer provided by the power company, rated at 12.5kV-208Y/120V. No further information available about it at this time. Emergency Power System: Motor generator rated at 120Y/208V, 3 Ф, 4 wire, 125 kw. The generator feeds main elevator, exhaust fan-1, emergency building lighting and power. Overcurrent Protective Devices: Circuit Breakers Location of Switchgear, Panelboards, and Motor Control Center: Exterior to the Building: Power company service transformer: 12.5kV-208Y/120VAC Power company kwh meter (by power company) Main Electrical Room (Basement) contains: Main service switchboard: 120/208V, 3 Ф, 4 wire, 4000 A, 100,000 AIC All circuit breakers for the building Isolation transformer providing clean power for computers Motor Control Center Power company meter (by power company) Digital circuit meter (by owner) Shunt trip connected to emergency power disconnect on 1 st floor Transient voltage surge suppressor Automatic transfer switch: 208V, 3 Ф, 4 pole, 400 A Backstage Electrical Room (1 st Floor): Contains four panelboards, not yet specified what these serve. Judging by where it is located, I would assume that it serves the backstage storage area, loading dock, laundry, and dressing rooms.
3 Lobby Area Electrical Room (1 st Floor): Contains two panelboards, not yet specified what these serve. Assume that they serve the pantry, lobby, vestibule, art gallery, manager s office, and ticket office. Dimmer Rack Room (2 nd Floor, Rear): Contains two panelboards (as shown at this time) serving all the dimmable stage lights and the house lights. Classroom Area Electrical Room (2 nd Floor): Contains three panelboards, appearing to serve classrooms, pantry, lounge, and workroom. Typical Lighting Systems and Operating Voltage: Fluorescent using 120V, Incandescent in theater area using 120V, low voltage step lighting using 12V. Power Factor Correction: None Important Design Requirements: Info on Lamps, Ballasts i.e. input watts, operating voltage, current, power factor Fixture Name 2x4 Parabolic Louver Location Classroom Lamp Type 4 Fluor. 4 Mechanical Equipment: Note: These mechanical systems are not the actual design for the building, but are examples taken from another similar project. Because the actual mechanical equipment has not been selected, the panelboard sizing that corresponds to the information below is not available. Because no panelboard schedules are available, it is impossible to know how loads were grouped together. Also, the NEC does not provide information about stage lighting loads, so only the house lighting load was calculated. Overall, the calculated lighting loads are far below what they will actually be in the theater area. Utility Rate Structure:
