Meeting Agenda 2 1. Project Scope 2. Design Direction 3. Design Details 4. Schedule and Construction Logistics
3 SOUTH UNIVERSITY Street Design Project Scope
South University Project Extent 4
Project Scope 5 Maintenance Issues to Address: Damaged sidewalk (concrete) and heaving concrete pavers Removal of broken landscape planters Replacement of trees and landscaping (lawn) Replacement seating and furnishings (benches, receptacles, seat walls) Ponding water in sidewalks Utility adjustments as needed (e.g. fire hydrants, light poles) Cluttered and constrained sidewalks Work Added to the Project: Bump-out at Forest and Washtenaw to connect district and increase pedestrian safety. Re-lamping the fixtures to improve light distribution and levels. Extending walk width to increase sidewalk use for cafés
Design Resolution 6 What We Heard Best Practices Design Response Bump-outs too cluttered and restrictive Pedestrian walk areas should be designed to be flexible enough to allow for a range of activities The planters will be removed and number of trees per bumpout reduced to 2 Need to a least match current tree quantity, if not add more; generally add more green Trees and plantings increase the comfort of visitors, increase sales, and provide stormwater benefits Bump-outs trees will be in low plant beds for tree health (grow larger); mid-block trees added Not enough space for outdoor dining at mid-block areas Avoid narrow walks in high image or high traffic areas; promote private use of walk space for café s Increase width of walks to 14.5 feet allowing 4-person tables and tree plantings (in grates) Light levels are not consistent Provide reasonable even levels of light through the street; avoid hot spots Re-lamping fixtures to provide more even light levels
Design Resolution 7 What We Heard Best Practices Design Response Provide seating, but don t over do it! Crossing Forest and Washtenaw are difficult for pedestrians; eastern block does not feel connected Keep the design simple; take design cues from campus Seating should be provided for the comfort of visitors, and be located to allow people watching and encourage social interaction In high pedestrian traffic areas, crossing distances should be minimized for pedestrian safety Simple use of forms and quality materials increases longevity of design Provide for seating at corners that can be integrated into outdoor dining when appropriate Add bumpouts at Forest and Washtenaw to decrease crossing distance and provide more flexible space in walk zone Use pavers and planter curbs in patterns similar to campus; detail construction in a durable manner Integrate best practices for street trees and stormwater Allow trees adequate soil mass and air; manage stormwater to improve water quality and reduce runoff Place trees in planted areas and larger grates; integrate rain gardens into bumpouts

Current Overall Plan (Forest Intersection) 10 Forest St. bike lanes to carry through the intersection. FOREST Current café seating at bumpouts
Current Overall Plan (Washtenaw Intersection) 11 Lawn areas will be removed and replaced with paving and landscape planters. Existing established trees will remain (be integrated into planting beds).
Parking & Loading Zones 12 C A B A Church St Loading Zone: Too large. Reduce size and add a few on-street parking spaces and a 15-minute parking space (pick-up/drop-off). B Forest loading zone: Switch places with on-street parking directly to the south. This allows trucks to pull up and avoid conflicts with the new bump-outs. C Additional on-street parking can be added. Maintain a loading zone near the corner.
