19 Climate change and Risks Network Brings together practitioners from the Interreg community, regional stakeholders, experts and other EU programmes and knowledge communities active in the field of climate change and risks. The objective is to facilitate the exchange of practices/lessons among existing projects, to gain knowledge about the current experiences with the aim to support a common Interreg response to the EU Sustainable Growth policy. The network was launched during the Lets practice capitalisation! event in Rome in June 2017 with the presence of over 20 participants. 20 Network activities during EWRC 2017 Workshop - How projects impact on the policy level? The effective contribution of Interreg results to the EU Climate change policy - full report HERE. Interreg supports the fight against climate change with more than 38% of total Interreg funds; Territorial approach, cooperation and multi-governance are Interreg values and at the same time key elements to face climate change challenge; Success stories were presented: BSR Baltadapt on how to adapt to climate change impact; MED Marie on energy efficiency improvement in existing buildings in the Mediterranean region; Alpine Enerbuild on energy production of buildings.

28 Interreg Thematic Objectives TO 5: promoting climate change adaptation, risk prevention and management

29 Climate Actions in Interreg The EU institutions committed to devote at least 20% of the EU budget to climate change adaptation and mitigation in the period. The thematic objectives introduced as part of the programming of ESIF expenditure include two which are particularly relevant for climate. 30 Climate change exposure in Europe Recent studies show that places where the effects are likely to be particularly severe will progressively extend northwards to central and western Europe in the coming decades, covering, by 2050, many areas of the Netherlands, the UK and Ireland as well Spain, France, Italy, Bulgaria and Romania. 31 Climate Change and Macro Regional Strategies These strategies have the potential to further strengthen cooperation between multiple countries and address common challenges, such as climate change. The EUSBSR helped to foster cooperation on climate change adaptation and supported the development of the Strategy on Adaptation to Climate Change in the Baltic Sea Region. Project BALTADAPT The EUSDR also promoted the implementation of various environmental and climate projects, such as the development of a common methodology for natural risk assessment and management under climate change. In the EUSALP, climate change could particularly affect the Alpine Region in terms of availability of resources and threats to population. Project SEAP_ALPS In the EUSAIR a horizontal priority is the climate change adaptation. The use of macro-regional strategies could be further mainstreamed into Cohesion Policy as they have the potential to lead to coordinated regional actions in various fields, including climate change mitigation and adaptation.
