2 Executive Summary The University Research Building (URB) is being constructed to house three collaborative research labs: the Extreme Materials Institute, the Individualized Health Initiative, and the Systems Institute. Each of these research programs pulls expertise from multiple departments within the university, and the URB will provide laboratory and office space to foster communication and collaboration. The building will also be home to the university s Computer Science department. The lighting within four spaces of the building will be examined for this report. The spaces proposed for study are as follows: Large Work Space: Research Lab Room 350 Special Purpose Space: Systems Institute Collaboration Theater Room 328 Circulation Space: Lobby and Commons Areas Floors 1 and 2 Outdoor Space: Building Entrances and Quad Landscaping 2

3 Research Lab Room 350 The research lab, located on the third floor of the building, spans a majority of the eastern side of the building. The eastern wall of the space features floor to ceiling glass as part of the curtain wall on the building s east façade this façade will be studied as partt of daylighting, mechanical, and architecture breadths. While the space is designated as a lab, activities will be more similar to those typically found in open offices rather than typical labs found elsewhere in the building. 4 Systems Institute Collaboration Theater Room 328 The Systems Institute Collaboration Theater may be used for activities similar to those of a classroom or conference room. The space will host meetings,, presentations, and discussions for faculty and students of the Systems Institute. Primary visual activities in the space may include reading, writing, computer use, video conferencing, and A/V presentations. Ass part of the lighting study of this space, three schematic design concepts will be developed. The space features a glazed wall which provides a view into the corridor on two sides of the room. 5 Lobby and Commons Areas Floors 1 & 2 The lobby and commons areas on the first and second floors of the building serve as the main entrance to the URB and areas for students and faculty to congregate and relax. In this space, lighting design to produce a psychological impression will be studied.. Primary activities in this space include circulation, socializing, and some reading and writing. Lighting design will need to balance illumination requirements for these activities while creating the desired psychological impression. 9 Building Entrances and Quad Landscaping Two covered walkways serve to connect the main entrances of the URB to surrounding buildings on the campus quad. I propose to study the lighting of these colonnades connecting buildings, as well as new landscaping and pathways planned for the area of the quad surrounding the URB.
