12 Confined Area Impervious Cover Reduction Rain Garden / Bioretention Captures and filters road runoff; creates wildlife habitat O&M: Road Surfacing Rural Roads Practice Selection Managing a rural road Preservation of Natural Features Unconfined Area Stone Armored Swales Unpaved Culvert Outlet Plunge Pools Regulates runoff velocity and reduces erosion; improves wildlife habitat O&M: Check Dams Operation and Maintenance (O&M) Requirements: Minimal: Moderate: High: Stonearmored Turnouts Directs stormwater off of roads to stable stone-armored areas; prevents erosion O&M: Water Bars Decision Tree (pg. 4) 1) Start by deciding if you can reduce impervious cover (reduce road width or length) or preserve natural features on-site 2) Do you have a confined or unconfined area? 3) If it s confined you ll be working on the surface or in the ditches. 4) If it s not you can install practices outside the road ROW like turnouts, plunge pools, or other infiltration or sedimentation practices. Correct crowning and stable surface materials prevent erosion and improve driving conditions O&M: Lowmaintenance; redirects, slows, and filters stormwater O&M: Slows, and filters stormwater; can be incorporated into existing ditches and swales O&M: Directs stormwater off of unpaved roads to stable vegetated areas; prevents erosion O&M: This Will Guide Your Design Process. 6/22/
