6 DESIGN Lighting TECHNIQUES Lighting Design THE ART OF THE Design Many different techniques will create a variety of effects for your home and property. The overall effect is dependent on what you would like the end result to be. Whether it is the imposing dramatic effect on the left or a subtle and elegant look on the right, your lighting professional will create the atmosphere you desire. Keep in mind that several fixtures focused on an area from multiple angles can highlight an object with a softer light than a single very bright fixture. Below are just a few of the techniques used to illuminate your property. STEP LIGHTING VOYAGER LONDONER Designed for safety, step lighting will clearly illuminate the steps designed into your living space, providing easy walking paths and directional assistance. MOONLIGHTING QUASAR PROBE-OSM In the garden, moonlighting can be used to create the shadowing patterns of a moonlit night. Moonlighting is a subtle and natural effect, often using cool bluish LED lamps to create the look of natural moonlight. SHADOWING PROBE GUARDIAN Shadowing utilizes the shadow created by a tree or object to enhance a design. The lighting fixture will be placed in front of the tree or feature and create the shadow on the object behind. SUBMERSIBLE ATLANTIS Water features create a vivid design into the landscape. Area lights are often staggered and alternating from one side to another when used on a pathway. 20 LED LAMP FLEX SERIES LED Lamps There are two main lighting characteristics that define the quality and consistency of LED light: CRI & CCT. FLEX Series LED lamps keep tight control of these two characteristics. What this means to you is that each project will be consistent with your last project no surprises! CRI - Color Rendering Index CRI is another important characteristic of LED light sources. Poor CRI can destroy a beautiful landscape.cri is a measurement of vibrant and true colors. CRI is measured on a scale from 0 to 100, with 100 being the best. All lamp sources have different CRI measurements, fluorescents are not very good at 65-70, metal halide lamps are better at 80, halogen lamps are perfect at 100. A CRI of 80+ is considered very good within the LED industry. FLEX Series LED lamps have a CRI between 82 and 84. CRI of less than 70 changes and reduces the vibrant colors of this landscape. Colors become muted and hint towards grey. CRI of between 70 and 80 looks better, but with a slight hint of yellow. Still not showing true vibrant colors. Reds look pinkish. CRI over 80 is considered very good in the LED industry. Colors are bright, vibrant and true. CRI less than 80 will not display flowers and foliage properly. 21 LED Lamps FLEX SERIES LED LAMP Correlated Color Temperature (K) HIGHER KELVIN (CCT) = HIGHER LUMEN OUTPUT Daylight 6500K Stark White 5000K Cool White K White 3000K-3500K Warm White 2500K-2800K CCT - Correlated Color Temperature The CCT rating for a lamp is a general "warmth" or "coolness" measurement of its appearance. The lower the Kelvin temperature the warmer the light, the higher the Kelvin temperature the cooler the light. A typical halogen MR16 lamp runs from 2800K to 3100K. FLEX Series LED lamps are available in three color temperatures: 2700K, 3000K and 5000K. 2700K 3000K Warm White is slightly warmer and looks a little closer to incandescent. For subtle lighting. White is a little cooler and a little closer to halogen. Produces slightly more lumen output than a 2700K CCT lamp LOWER KELVIN (CCT) = LOWER LUMEN OUTPUT 5000K Cool White is much whiter/bluish light. Great for water applications and down lighting or moon lighting. 124 INFORMATION Technical FIXTURE FINISHES Please note that all Unique Lighting Systems fixtures have a Living Finish, and can be expected to vary in hue over time. Our fixtures come standard with our one-of-a-kind Weathered Brass finish, natural brass, or natural copper. Additional colors may be ordered with powder coating options. These colors are subject to additional lead times and will incur a cost premium. A limited warranty applies to all powder coat finishes. 125 Technical INFORMATION INSTALLATION SEQUENCE Transformer installation overview Transformer Location and Mounting Instructions 1. Select an appropriate location to mount the transformer, make sure transformer is within four feet of GFCI protected power outlet. 2. Be sure to locate the transformer in an area that has proper ventilation. 3. Use a level to aid you with marking the wall where the transformer will hang. Low Voltage Cable Connections 1. Pull your home run wires to HUB locations starting with the longest run first. 2. Number the end of each home run at the HUB and Transformer. 3. After all fixtures have been placed and Hubs have been connected, gather all home run wires at the transformer. Proper Voltage 1. Connect all your home run wires to the 15v or 26v tap to load the transformer. 2. Starting with your longest home run remove it from the 15v or 26v and connect tothe 12v or 24v tap. 3. If the volt meter reads 9 volts, you will need to add 3 volts at the transformer to compensate for the voltage drop. You would need to connect this home run wire to the 15 volt lug terminal (12 volts plus 3 volts equals 15 volts) The target voltage at the Hub is 12v. 4. Follow the same procedure for each home run wire remaining volt systems follow the same steps. 122

127 Technical INFORMATION TRANSFORMERS & LEDs Watts and VA (Volts x Amps) When calculating the required transformer for your installation consider the VA and not the wattage for each FLEX Series lamp on the load. The secondary side of the transformer needs to be sized by measuring VA, not Wattage of the lamps. We all know that for halogen lamps: Power (Watts) = V x A 35 Watt Halogen = 12V x 2.9A This simple equation changes when we are seeking power for electronic components including fluorescent lamps, electronic metal halide lamps and ALL LED products. Electronic components introduce Power Factor, the ratio of real power vs. apparent power, to the equation. This new result is called VA (Volt Amps). Power = (V X A) / pf Example: Typical 5W MR16 LED Lamp 6.62(VA) = (12V x.42a) /.761 Cost of Ownership Homeowner Energy The power company will bill the homeowner according to the wattage, not the higher VA rating. The power losses associated with the electronic components of the LED are on the secondary side of the transformer and do not reflect on the primary side. What is an LED? About the Light Emitting Diode A light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor device that emits visible light when an electric current passes through it. The tiny diode fits easily into an electric circuit. Unlike ordinary incandescent lamps, they do not have a filament that burns out or gets hot. Individual LEDs are binned and then clustered on a circuit board to create an array, which is then incorporated into a lamp. Why such a price difference on LED lamps? Tighter binning tolerance = More $ LEDs are created as a flat sheet, known as a wafer. Then they are separated into tiny chips and binned according to three characteristics: Color temperature CRI Lumen output Because FLEX Series lamps control these characteristics very tightly, you will have consistant installations time after time. 128 PATINA TREATMENT COPPER & BRASS FINISH TREATMENTS Fixtures in natural copper and brass are a living finish and are intended to change color or patina over time. To speed up the patina process, use this simple process to get the look you want overnight. CAUTION SHOULD BE EXERCISED WHEN HANDLING AND APPLYING PATINA SOLUTION - WEAR GLOVES AND SAFETY GLASSES. FOLLOW SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY ON THE CONTAINERS. Spread newspaper under plant material to protect it. It is best to install pathlight fixtures first then apply solution. Fixtures should be cleaned to remove oil and dirt with Windex -type cleaner. GREEN PATINA FORMULA 2 parts white vinegar 1 1/2 parts non-detergent ammonia 1/2 part non-iodized salt Application: Clean fixture with soft cloth Windex -type cleaner to remove oil and dirt. Premix patina solution in Windex-type spray bottle Spray Windex cleaner on fixture to break surface tension, leaving it on when you apply patina solution. Apply patina solution by spraying onto fixture, preferably in the early evening on a high humidity night. Allow to set for 1 hour, then reapply solution observing where you missed applying on the first coat. If there seems to be oil that is repelling the patina solution, clean it off with the Windex cleaner. Allow to sit overnight. The result will be a bright green powdery patina. Do not rub off. In time (and re-applications) this finish will become permanent. The brightness will fade with time. To reduce green, cut back on the salt content. Color and effect is greatly affected by application ambient temperature and humidity. BEFORE AFTER 125
