3 Welcome to Green Sky Thinking 2018 The UK s biggest get-together of sustainable citymaking professionals is back for its 8th outing, with a new programme, a half-day conference, and a new theme people first. Green Sky Thinking offers a crash course in where sustainable design is headed. Hattie Hartman, sustainability editor, The Architects Journal This year, Green Sky Thinking (GST) will begin with an early evening event (on May 10) at an exclusive central London location with a guest speaker, drinks and a chance for the capital s leading sustainability experts to network and discuss this year s programme. The following day (May 11), our half-day conference kicks off. At a venue to be confirmed, speakers will present new thinking on people first approaches to city making, alongside ethical development and insight from the proptech sector. Then, from May 14-18, the programme continues with five events a day, at venues across London, exploring honest lessons learned from the capital s best sustainable city-making projects. These projects, curated by Open City s GST panel and selected from submissions addressing our people first theme, will be led by you: London s built environment specialists with a passion and expertise in sustainable design. We ll be hosting another Hackathon this year a one-day city-making challenge for mixed discipline teams during the London Festival of Architecture in June, exploring the notion of the public ground floor. This year s theme: people first Green Sky Thinking is London s leading forum for progressive city makers from built environment professionals focused on sustainable design across architecture engineering, planning and urban design, to thought leaders, academics and politicians exploring the societal implications of climate change. Green Sky Thinking s aims are threefold: To provide a snapshot of how sustainable design and development is being practically applied across London To explore proven sustainable design techniques with site- and project-specific workshops To strengthen cross-sector collaboration and foster new relationships and connections This year, the theme defining Green Sky Thinking s week of events is people first. All events included in this year s programme will explore sustainable design from a human perspective. For example, they may have a BREEAM outstanding building, but will discuss how the end-user experience shaped the design approach? Or a recently completed social housing scheme may highlight best practice in terms of density and energy usage, but can also demonstrate how the client and designer involved residents in the pre-build process? Or, even how workplace design and culture is adapting to new commuting patterns inspired by walkable cities and bike infrastructure? Who is it for? GST is relevant for planners, policy-makers, property developers, investors, engineers, architects, urban designers, councillors, contractors, academics, housing professionals, infrastructure experts, retail experts, tech-sector specialists and sustainability, energy and waste consultants. Green Sky Thinking Week champions thought leadership and innovation, but in ways that we can value and become advocates of, too. Isabel McAllister, sustainability director, Mace Green Sky Thinking presented a great opportunity for us to connect with clients and collaborators, reflect on our achievements and apply lessons learned to shape our future direction. From housing to place-making, prop-tech to AI, health and well-being and net-zero carbon design, people and their experience of the built environment provide the common ground.

Sharing honest lessons learnt and Seeing solutions that really work were ranked as the most important aspects of GST. Press, Marketing and Social Media tweets with 5,130 followers and an average of 8.7K impressions per day during the week Twitter campaign, during which #greenskythinking2017 trended throughout the week, with professionals and companies from all over the UK tweeting about our events and their experiences Outreach Printed programme booklet: 2,000 copies distributed to target audience. PDF programme: Circulated amongst over 400 leading built environment companies 95 hosting companies profiled the programme via company website/social media and network and direct invitations.
