1 H - - MP - Elephant Park Public Realm RO EY DN NEW KENT ROAD E AC PL The public realm has been designed to create an environment which is easy to move through, accessible to all, safe and playful. The new network of green streets within Elephant Park will reinstate a traditional pattern of streets that create links between surrounding neighbourhoods, parks and civic spaces. The existing mature trees are a considerable asset to the public realm as they frame the network of streets and open spaces. These trees are retained where possible and new tree planting is used to extend the existing canopy to create a green grid. The public realm has been designed to be: Simple and legible; Consistent in character across Elephant Park and with local streets in Southwark and the broader London context; High quality, attractive and long lasting; Provide places to sit and relax; Be well lit and safe; Increase biodiversity; and Encourage walking and cycling. Park Central (North) CHATTERIS WAY LION WAY Ha Facilities within the public realm will include:. Play area;. Outdoor seating for cafe and restaurant uses;. Relocated existing cycle route (LCN);. Seating areas;. A traffic free route next to the park; and. Limited access for vehicles. THE PROMENADE July 07

2 public realm - MP - Elephant Park The proposed landscape design for New Kent Road provides an improved environment for pedestrians and cyclists, retaining and enhancing the existing street trees. The existing trees will be set within a landscaped buffer adjacent to the highway. The existing cycle route, LCN, will be relocated next to this landscape buffer, allowing for a pedestrian footway next to the new shops. The cycle lane will be carefully designed to make sure it is clear of obstructions and safe for both cyclists and pedestrians. H Particular care is being given to the relationship between the cycle lane, existing trees and the bus stop next to Park Central (North) and is the subject of ongoing discussion with TfL and the council.. Pedestrian crossing connecting to Falmouth Road and communities north of New Kent Road. Retained existing mature trees enhance. Two-way cycle route (LCN). Wide pedestrian route adjacent to retail frontage and buffered from the carriageway by cycle route and soft landscape zone. Soft landscape buffer zone. 3 public realm - MP - Elephant Park Lion Way Lion Way will provide a pedestrian route from the new Park to Falmouth Road and communities to the north of Elephant Park. It will include a pocket park and one of the largest existing trees as a focal point at the junction with. Vehicles will use Lion Way to access Park Central (North)and for servicing and car parking, removing the need to use the Park Promenade for vehicles (except emergency vehicles). Lion Way will be designed to create a pedestrian friendly environment that is clearly communicated through the layout and materiality of the streetscape, and the extensive soft landscaping. The junction of Lion Way and will be carefully designed to ensure it is safe for pedestrians and cyclists using with a continous and level footway. Entrances to the residential blocks and good overlooking from the homes will ensure that Lion Way feels safe for everyone to use. 4 public realm - MP - Elephant Park The Promenade The Park Promenade runs along the northern boundary of the new Park and will be fronted by café and restaurant uses in the ground floor of MP. Generous outdoor seating areas for the cafés and restaurants will bring life to the northern side of the Park Promenade. On the southern side of the Park Promenade, rain gardens will create a soft natural boundary to the park. The rain gardens also provide sustainable urban drainage to the areas of hard landscaping. The Park Promenade was originally planned to be a vehicular route in the Outline Masterplan, providing access for taxi drop-off. MP proposes to change this arrangement to make The Park Promenade a pedestrian and cycle route with access only for emergency vehicles. Subject to approval, the Park Promenade is likely to be named Ash Avenue providing a consistent street naming from through Elephant Park.. Carriageway raised table in areas of key pedestrian crossings. East-West pedestrian route connection to Elephant and Castle station to the west and Victory Park the associated communities to the east. 5 public realm - MP - Elephant Park Chatteris Way Chatteris Way will add a further connection between the new Park and. This route will be pedestrian only and will include trees, landscaped beds, cycle stands, an area of childrens play, and places to sit and relax. It will include shared entrances to the homes in and flexible business use at ground floor to be mirrored on the other side of the street. These uses will help to bring life and activity to Chatteris Way throughout the day.. Feature trees. Street trees and understorey planting softer and define the streetscape.
