9 PROFESSIONAL INTERESTS AND OBJECTIVES As a practitioner and classroom educator for the past 21 years, I have had the opportunity to develop numerous professional interests and objectives. My current research interests evolve around travel and tourism and natural resource management, particularly in the coastal zone. Both my practical experience in the field of coastal zone natural resource management and my involvement in research related to barrier island processes and procedures have made me somewhat of an expert in the field of coastal zone natural resource recreation management. I have served as an expert witness in this area on several occasions and have been involved in numerous professional presentations on natural resource management in the coastal zone. I also have a strong professional interest in coastal zone natural resource management as it relates to system biodiversity, sustainable coastal recreation, visitor behavior, tourism, and human dimensions and impacts, particularly as defined by recreational use in the coastal zone. I am interested in developing an ecotourism/nature-tourism model for coastal zone recreation resource management and intend to explore and expand my research and knowledge in these and other associated areas over the next several years. My practical experience in the field of parks and recreation administration also leads me in a desire to research and explore more fully the area of human resource management as it impacts all sectors of the leisure service delivery system. I believe that one of the most difficult challenges facing managers in the field of parks and recreation administration relates to their ability to get the most out of their employees. To this end, I intend to direct some of my future research into the area of human resource management in hopes of providing parks and recreation managers with better information when making decisions regarding the planning, organizing, staffing, directing, controlling and evaluating of their human resources. 9
