The 27 th KIMO International Conference and AGM Hosted by Malmö Municipality With assistance from Lomma, Helsingborg and Simrishamn October 2017

2 Introduction As a part of the UN s work with its global Sustainable Development Goals, Sweden and Fiji have been given joint overall responsibility for supporting the implementation of Global Goal 14 Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development. The City of Malmö is hosting Life Below Water - an international conference with the purpose to help boost local implementation of UN Global Goal 14. Local work is critical in the delivery of the UN goal and Malmö is one of the cities at the forefront by demonstrating how work towards sustainability generates local development and societal benefit. This year KIMO has been invited to participate in the Life Below Water Conference where KIMO delegates will have the opportunity to network with a wide range of fellow participants who share an interest in protecting our marine environment. The Conference will focus on six main themes relating to the implementation of UN Global Goal 14 :

3 Technical Visits Conference delegates will be offered a range of interesting technical visits all on the theme of the sea and linked to UN Global Goal 14, but which also offer an overall picture of the City of Malmö s work with Agenda 2030 Global Goals for Sustainable Development. During the technical visits, both in and around Malmö, participants will get to see the important work being done there. Each technical visit is linked to one of the themes that form the very core of the conference. These themes include: Ocean Literacy, Plastic Pollution in the Oceans, Sustainable Marine Food, Planning for Raised Sea Levels, Sustainable Blue Growth and Leadership for Sustainability. Depending on the technical visit you choose, you could find yourself taking part in a boat trip around the city of Malmö in the Øresund strait or a tasting of sustainable and nutritious food from the sea (locally produced and prepared) or an overview of how Malmö is investing in the education of future generations as linked to ocean literacy and leadership for sustainability or thoughts about plastic pollution and solutions to the problem. More information about the details of each visit will be available at the registration table on the first day of the Conference. You will be able to choose your preferred technical visit at the Conference registration table on the 11th of October.

4 Dialogue Seminars The sustainable vessels and ports of the future What does the future hold for the shipping sector in the light of the Paris Agreement and the UN's Sustainable Development Goals? Analyses and trend spotting. Ocean Literacy and Education This dialogue seminar provides the opportunity to engage in a more detailed discussion regarding Malmö s work on Ocean Literacy and Sustainable Marine Food During this dialogue seminar, we look forward to Education together with other institutions based all over the globe. To spread good examples and learn from each other! constructive conversations focusing on local activity to promote climate-smart and sustainable seafood, contributing to the implementation of UN Planning for raised sea levels Global Goal 14. How do we deal with the rising sea levels in coastal communities while also living up to the commitments of UN Global Goal 14? Leadership for Sustainability in Ocean Governance and Management This seminar will analyse and discuss issues related to the concept of marine sustainability, governance and management from the perspectives of existing laws and regulations, organisational behaviour and human factors. Plastic Pollution in the Ocean It is crucial that the problem of microplastics is addressed by tackling the sources. Sustainable Marine Food The oceans boast fantastic conditions to provide us with high quality food, as long as we utilise their resources in a way that is sustainable in the long term. During the dialogue seminar, we look forward to constructive conversations focusing on local activity to promote climate-smart and sustainable seafood, contributing to the implementation of UN Global Goal 14.
