22 Connectivity An interconnected network of automobile and active circulation create powerful internal connections and to the adjacent residential blocks and larger Anacostia community. This network effectively breaks down the barrier between the campus and its surroundings, linking the two together as one. A multi-modal transportation system maximizes site access, and includes transit, bicycle, and pedestrian systems. Pedestrian pathways in and around the two quadrangles, as well as the pedestrian Transit Plaza will enhance these spaces and create the places of human interaction and exchange that stimulate innovation. The Place of Innovation A powerful synergy is created by the spatial layout and program components of the Master Plan that create the place of innovation. Key to the innovation district concept is the removal of the existing barrier between the campus and the surrounding neighborhood, knitting the district together with the broader Anacostia community, its people and its assets. Within the campus, innovation is foster through the identification of innovation cultivators the Microsoft Innovation Center, incubator and shared work space, and research facilities that support the growth of individuals, firms and their ideas. These are supported by the innovation drivers the academic and research uses surrounding the oval quadrangle, that focus on developing new technologies, products and services for the market. As a community, these are supported by a comprehensive program of neighborhood amenities open space, retail, recreation and other uses, within the campus and in the broader Anacostia neighborhood. The Future Connectivity & The Place of Innovation 23
23 Urban Design Places The creation of place and a powerful public realm is a foundational concept of the Master Plan vision for the East Campus. The location and character of these places are derived from the spatial assets and iconic buildings of the existing campus and surrounding neighborhood. These places marry the new development with the existing environment, creating a new image and identity to the campus founded on the old. Iconic Buildings include: The Metro entrance (1); The Microsoft Innovation Center (3); The Central Kitchen Pavilion re-purposed as retail and a neighborhood amenity, and, The existing Chapel (6) The Places include: The Transit Plaza (2); Located at the Metro and the entrance from Alabama Avenue, the plaza is lined with retail, cafes, and animated with public activity, creating a new gateway and front door to the East Campus. The Microsoft Innovation Center graces the north side of the space. The Oval Quadrangle (4); A new quadrangle, terminated at one end by the Microsoft pavilion and encircled by new academic buildings, gracefully links with the existing campus. The Residential Green (5); A new green is created at a reconfigured intersection of Dogwood Street and Malcolm X Avenue that links the existing blocks with new housing. The Steeple Street (6); Dogwood Street at its western end is lined with new housing, creating a powerful street and enhancing the historic structure.
