4.0 SOFT LANDSCAPING & PLANTING The purpose of this section is to describe the horticultural characteristics of Herbert Park. The history as well as the present condition of the planting is described. Measures are proposed for the future maintenance and management of the planting. In 2012 a survey of the trees in the park was carried out on behalf of Dublin City Council in accordance with BS5837. This survey has been used to help identify tree species and to estimate the period of planting of some of the larger specimen trees in the park. Planting History The horticultural history of Herbert Park can be considered in terms of four time periods: pre-1903 as marshy grazing lands subject to occasional flooding; 1903 to c development as parkland and later the site of the 1907 Dublin International Exhibition; a period of little additional planting during the early to mid twentieth century and: 1985 to the present day when some significant new planting took place in association with National Tree Week and other events. It is apparent from the plans for the 1907 exhibition that the preparation for and construction of the structures, paving and other elements required for such an event would have had a significant impact on the site. There are, however, clues to the preexhibition landscape within these plans. A number of existing specimen trees are indicated on the exhibition drawings and the plan had been designed to retain and work around these trees. One possible example of this is the large Fagus sylvatica (beech) Fig. 50 Large trees around the pond unlikely to date from the Exhibition. Fig. 51 Information panel on native trees planted in the park. located to the south of the row of Carpinus betulus (hornbeam). The geometry of the pond constructed for the exhibition may also have been designed to work around existing trees but there is no conclusive evidence that this is the case. Photographs suggest that existing large trees may have been accommodated, but the pond was constructed so closely to these trees that the damage caused by excavation would have lead to their early demise. Early photographs of the ponds show large trees which may have been newly transplanted trees, either from within the site, or supplied by nurseries for the exhibition. Transplanting of large specimen trees had been successfully undertaken since the Georgian era, so it is possible that some of the large trees in the photographs could have been transplanted. While there are some notable nineteenth century trees located in the park they are not numerous enough to be considered characteristic of the park in its current condition. The park is heavily planted with a very wide variety of trees which range in age from approximately 200 years to recently planted. Boundary planting does, however, contribute to the atmosphere and character of the present day park. The boundary in general is heavily planted and some of this planting is likely to predate the exhibition. Significant exhibition planting included alignments of Tilia Platyphyllos Corallina (lime) and Ulmus Wheatley (Elm). The elms succumbed to Dutch Elm Disease and 24
Fig. 52 Mature Fagus Sylvatica (beech) that may predate the exhibition and Carpinus betulus Fastigiata, planted in the 1980s. were replaced with hornbeams, but both the elms and limes served to flank the paths and routes as laid out for the exhibition and to create various sub-spaces within the park. Recent planting includes Carpinus betulus Fastigiata (hornbeam) which replaced the elms and also served to commemorate Ireland s first National Tree Week. Clusters of trees were planted throughout the park in the 1980s, 1990s and up to the present day. These may now require thinning, or removal in some cases. Their gradual replacement with larger deciduous trees, more in keeping with the historic character of the park. Planting Present Condition Today there are approximately 1,280 trees in Herbert Park. The 2012 tree survey indicates that of the trees on site roughly one fifth might benefit from some form of pruning or other arboricultural management. Due to the park being heavily planted with trees, sub spaces are created breaking up the otherwise flat, open site. There are many possible combinations of routes between these spaces and most are enclosed. The southern end of the park is unique in its openness, with long views south to the Dublin and Wicklow hills. The density of the tree and shrub planting is problematic in some parts of the park in terms of shade, management of the ground flora, and possibly safety. On the other hand it provides shelter from exposure and has the potential to add significant ecological value. Native species are promoted in the park, not only for their individual traits but also for their value in terms of plant associations and therefore habitat. The sub-spaces formed by tree planting vary. in character. The variety of experience which is apparent on the ground is also legible in the plan. Figure 55 illustrates eight character areas, with smaller sub-spaces to be found within. 25
Fig. 53 Selected trees which may pre-date the 1907 exhibition, or have developed substantial crowns since the exhibition. From dark green to light green Aesculus hippocastanum (Horse Chestnut), Acer pseudoplatanus (Sycamore), Fagus sylvatica (Beech), other mixed. Even though trees may have been lost before or after the exhibition, this diagram suggest that the trees were distributed in an informal fashion 26
Fig. 54 Clumps and dense alignments of trees with ground flora (green). These areas have more ecological potential than single clear-stemmed trees in lawns. 27
Fig. 55 Character areas formed by tree planting: 1 open areas with views to south; 2 allee; 3 dense enclosure around pond; 4 bandstand and grove; 5 open sports area; 6 enclosed playground; 7 enclosed depot; 8 formal green incorporating streetscape. 28
Fig. 56 Selected well-used pedestrian routes within the park. There may be a partial correlation between the way pedestrians move through the park and the formal alignments or trees or other designed planting, but there is no pattern of movement which relates to a formal planting scheme. 29
