2 Assignment General Terms of Reference for Mayfield West Phase Two Secondary Plan requires the undertaking of a Cultural Heritage Survey to: Identify the level of significance of any cultural heritage resources existing within and in close proximity to the subject lands Make recommendations for the conservation of the cultural heritage resources, including whether a Cultural Heritage Impact Statement should be prepared Policy of the Caledon Official Plan

3 Definitions Cultural Heritage Landscapes A defined geographical area of heritage significance which has been modified by human activities and is valued by a community. It involves a grouping(s) of individual heritage features such as structures, spaces, archaeological sites, and natural elements, which together form a significant type of heritage form, distinctive from that of its constituent elements or parts. Source: Provincial Policy Statement, 2005; Caledon Official Plan an ensemble of cultural heritage resources such as a neighbourhood, townscape, roadscape including heritage roads, farmscape, or waterscape that is of significance because it illustrates noteworthy historic relationships between people and their environment. A cultural heritage landscape must also have an appropriate degree of integrity. Source: Caledon Official Plan

4 Definitions Built Heritage Resources One or more buildings, structures, monuments, installations or physical remains associated with architectural, cultural, social, political, economic, or military history and identified as being of value to a community. The contextual landscape is defined as: An ensemble of cultural and natural elements of significance to the setting of a built heritage resource. Source: Caledon Official Plan

5 Methodology Background and archival research to identify settlement history of former Chinguacousy Twp. and historic land ownership Review of Town s Draft Built Heritage Inventory Visual reconnaissance of study area and site tours of identified heritage properties Comparison of existing property fabric with historic mapping (1859 Tremaine Map, 1877 Peel Atlas) Evaluation / documentation of identified heritage properties using recognized methodology and criteria Recommendations for preservation of buildings and landscape context through Listing, Designation

7 Findings 15 properties within study area with heritage attributes including: farm complexes, individual buildings, and landscape features, comprised of: 8 properties with heritage features recommended for preservation and Listing on a municipal register 6 properties with heritage features recommended for preservation and Designation under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act, including 1 identified as a cultural heritage landscape 1 property with barn recommended for documentation, and treelined lane for preservation Former Credit Valley Railway identified as a cultural heritage landscape Heritage properties represent key opportunities for integration into the community plan.

9 2939 Old School Road one room former schoolhouse, S.S. 11 built 1866, with later additions red brick, featuring stone and buff brick detailing served as local school for almost 100 years

11 12259 Chinguacousy Road 1 ½ storey, three bay, side gable residence likely early log structure (covered by insulbrick) which predates 1859, perhaps prior to 1845 complex of barns and outbuildings of varying ages

13 12529 Chinguacousy Road an excellent example of a longstanding Caledon farm 1½ storey, side gabled house of dichromatic brick with stone and buff brick detailing, c.1865; three bay timber frame hay barn; stone / frame forge barn; tree-lined laneway; field patterns shaped by creek tributaries entire property is recommended for Designation under Part IV of the OHA, and is a cultural heritage landscape
