Executive summary The historical city of Versailles is located in the south western suburbs of Paris; 17 km away from its centre. This city attracts more than 6 million tourists every year thanks to its rich historical heritage, with a magnificent castle and gardens. The Inspiring Technovation consultancy firm aims to find technological solutions that fulfil the vision of transforming the city of Versailles into a hub for sustainable development by renovating Versailles Chantiers train station. The train station fails to meet the needs of the customers in terms of mobility, ambiance, both inside and outside. The firm started the project with an extensive analysis of the available published data (renovation plans, surveys, presentations, etc.) of Versailles Chantiers. This approach helped the team acquire a significant understanding of the renovation work and of the characteristics of the city of Versailles. In order to propose state-of the-art technological solutions to the issues of Versailles and the Versailles Chantiers train station, a benchmarking study was undertaken. During this study, similar projects were compared and their technologies were discussed considering the local features of the city, the possible acceptability and economical feasibility. The core of the project was dedicated to the analysis of different clusters included in our vision.it was found that these clusters are closely linked. We focused on and found solutions for mobility issues, the customer dissatisfaction, and the creation of new infrastructures. As a result, the profound analysis of these clusters led to the identification and screening of different competitive technologies that could be adapted overtime to meet the changes of infrastructure, peoples habits and behaviour. These innovative and integrated solutions depict how technological approaches could act as a driving force in transforming the Versailles station into a multimodal transportation and eco-innovative centre for various businesses and tourist activities. These technologies were, when possible, carefully selected to be the tools for the future shift from fossil fuels to renewable sources of energy. The vision of Versailles emerged from exhaustive work that incorporated field work, data analysis, and out of the box thinking to imagine what the town of Versailles would look like in the year Thanks to a progressive and adaptative implementation of technologies, the Versailles Chantiers train station will look and operate very differently from today. 4

Introduction The objective of this project is to set a long-term vision for the Versailles Chantiers train station. Versailles Chantiers is a main tourist station located at the south-west of Ile de France. We believe that Versailles must jump into a new era and join the emerging revolution of ecological and sustainable systems. We must further develop and capitalize on transportation, urban planning, and tourism to achieve our goal. These key factors are just a few examples of what we need to work on in Versailles to have our ideas come to fruition. Inspiring Technovation is our consultancy firm that proposes to use pioneering technology approaches to the railway station. We will identify and recommend a strategic set of technologies that will be able to transform our society and economy with the ultimate goal of allowing the transition to sustainable development. Our vision is to transform the city of Versailles into a hub for sustainable development by 2050 through the integration of eco-innovative technologies in the Versailles Chantiers train station. This report presents both our vision of Versailles in 2050 and the pathway for its achievement. In addition, the report proposes new technologies that will bring economical, environmental, and social benefits. This vision will be explained in detail throughout the project. We will expose the city of Versailles as it is seen today through a diagnostic approach. Our vision will also be compared to similar projects carried out around the world. Moreover, we will establish a pathway towards achieving a 100% renewable energy system for the Versailles Chantiers station. This is a response to the increasing demand for energy, environmental pressure, and climate change. Throughout this report we will examine the effects of the energy supply systems and effects of CO 2 emissions. We will also explain the economic, environmental, and social benefits of having such a system. Additionally, the study provides policy recommendations of what is needed to fully exploit the EU s vast renewable energy potential. Long-term scenarios will be considered as analytical tools. The scenarios will highlight our challenges, potential successes, and potential failures. By looking at the energy systems of the future we can provide valuable ideas of what has to be done now to achieve the desired outcome in Versailles by We will begin the journey to this exciting and innovative project by looking at our plan and the approach we used to begin this monumental task. 5

Material and methods The consultancy firm, Inspiring Technovation, designed a strategic plan to first set targets during the collection of data which this report is based on. Then we screened and filtered the most relevant information. The stages undertaken are as follows: Planning: One of the first tasks completed by this consultancy firm was the planning of activities. This process started by having team discussions in which the nature, challenges and other characteristics of the project were analyzed. We brainstormed at the end of this stage in order to collect ideas helping the team to proceed to the next stage. Benchmarking: This part of the process involved searching extensively for projects around the world that had similarities to the renovation project in the Chantiers train station in Versailles. The benchmarking exercise considered projects such as: train stations, airports, cities of the future and other less obvious projects such as new shopping centre and housing developments. Diagnosis: The diagnosis stage looked into the reasons why the Chantiers train station and the city of Versailles as a whole are seeking change. The main issues were identified and data from different stakeholders was collected in order to have a more comprehensive view of the problems. Literature review: This stage of the process consisted of a detailed searched of both scientific journals and well known institution reports. The literature review was used to gain a broader understanding of certain technologies and they way these technologies will interact and work in future scenarios. Open discussions: These types of discussions were a fundamental part of building and developing the concepts and ideas necessary to provide a realistic vision for the Chantiers train station and the city of Versailles. Meetings: Regular meetings were held for a period of 8 weeks; during these meetings the progress of the project was assessed. Challenges were discusses and solutions were suggested. The meetings were also used to exchange thoughts and clarify doubts regarding various areas of the project. Field work: The consultancy team visited the Chantiers train station and the city of Versailles several times. The main objective of the visits was to see in detailed the different features of the train station and to understand the dynamics of the city, its mobility, commerce and other relevant features. Surveying: To better understand the point of view and needs of the train station users and their thoughts about the renovation, the consultancy firm made and implemented a survey. We asked about their mobility problems, customer satisfaction with the current station, and desired improvements that they want or expect. 6

Recommendations Integrating clean energy systems The reality of transforming the Versailles train station into a sustainable hub is such that individual and isolated actions will not enable the rapid transition in a large scale in the future. The energy infrastructure on which the communities depend will therefore need to be adapted and upgraded to meet the future energy demands. One of the possible solutions is to develop and integrate clean energy technologies needed to support demand. The goals of integrating smart systems (water, electricity, PV, transportation, gas, heat, EV charging) through the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) can promote increased sustainability, reliability as well as social benefits such cost reduction, better services and job creation. Improve mobility Emphasize on pedestrians mobility at a local scale around the station development of the main roads (Avenue) of Versailles with areas for pedestrians and bicycle tracks, allowing for example the users of segways to move comfortably through the city. Reducing carbon emissions by promoting car sharing and increased parking spaces, for people using their cars to go to the station and then taking a train to reach their final destination. Identifying and promoting best sharing practices in Versailles and beyond, like bike parking lots, electric bike renting. Greater access to mass transportation systems such as tramways, pods and clean buses from stations to promote sustainable public transportation. Access to information Providing accurate, easily accessible information to customers by implementing energy saving practices and innovative technologies such as interactive information kiosks and smart tickets could play a major role in customer satisfaction across the station and the city. Community concept through Multimodal exchange Promote collaboration between firms and work collectively in environmental issues and in eco-innovation projects, also with other stakeholders, like universities. Attract businesses in environment and technology sector through the creation of Eco business parks to make this model as a sustainable conglomerate of buildings. 7

Conclusion One of the major aims of the railway station was to allow the creation and sustainability of large cities in a rapid rate. Sustainable development of railway station is closely related to city planning and its interaction with the communities. On conclusion technology innovations at the Versailles Chantiers train station should be evaluated and implemented at a macro level such that it is responsive to future changes and by doing that high standards in customer satisfaction and sustainability are achieved. Several leading and innovative cities have already taken innovative decisions to enhance the deployment and usage of renewable energy sources to adapt to demand of the future energy needs.our approach towards making Versailles a smart energy city will deeply focus on usage of energy more efficiently and generate heat, fuel and electricity from renewable sources. From a social perspective the creation of green spaces and Eco parks in the longer run will increase the awareness of current and future generations towards building a sustainable environment. A comprehensive investment on these technologies will not only reduce the carbon footprint in the future but also offer to increase business activities providing high quality jobs in different sectors which contributes towards an annual increase on the gross employment apart from bringing an immeasurable benefits on the working society. This report carefully attempts to consider the exploration of innovative and energy efficient technologies by taking in to account the wider social, economic and environmental effects in order to achieve a vision towards making Versailles a hub for sustainable development. 8
