AGENDA Introductions Purpose of this meeting Kimberley Veterans Cenotgaph Refurbishment Project Talk about why the current Cenotaph requires attention Consider new location Consider available budget resources and expenses Propose a refurbished Cenotaph and Veterans Memorial Park design Discuss what the Military Ames Group can provide Conduct a Question and Discussions session for all concerned Discuss and plan Next Steps'' Page 4 of 22
Cenotaph Current Location Corner of Kimberley Avenue and Spokane Street Page 5 of 22
Why a restoration is desired... Problem: Cenotaph is in poor physical condition and not in a central location Timing: There is federal funding available to assist with restoration work Opportunity: There is space for a park available across from City Hall To provide Kimberley with the pride and honour of a respectable Cenotaph to host Rememberance Day festivities; and Page 6 of 22 Goals: To provide a history-based educational focal point in the centre of Kimberley.
Proposed Cenotaph Location Vacant lot near the Platzl at corner of Spokane Street and Wallinger Avenue Page 7 of 22
Cenotaph Project Budget $25,000 Veterans Affairs Cenotaph Restoration Grant (if matched by local funding) $25,000 City funds to match VA grant $15,000(+) Additional city funding available Military Ames fund raising and SME consulting Page 8 of 22 Solicited local business contributions of money, time and materials
Cenotaph Project Expenses Trees provided by the city Stones donated by Teck Lighting installation time and effort donated by local electrician Plant standards 8 wooden (4x4 fir) donated by Tyee Plant hangar brackets donated by Top Crop Relocation of existing plaques and stones from original Cenotaph Military Ames members Lot, site preparation and small building to house a toilet room and an electrical distribution and sprinkler controls 'locker' City Cribbing and materials for monument base labour and materials donated by New Dawn $8,500 Irrigation system $8,000 Site preparation, sod and tree placement $35,000 Cement for walkways and Cenotaph base steps (plan altered from paving stones vis-a-vis cost) $2800 Entrance sign $500 Flag poles (2) TBD Large stone placement TBD TBD Information Station at entrance (Park founded/open, Park purpose, acknowledgement of major contributors etc.) Relocation of existing plaques and stones Page 9 of 22 TBD Lighting units (6 to shine up on monument 2 flagpole)
What Military Ames Will Provide We are fundraising to supply and install the first granite memorial bench, we will also be offering them for sale. We will respectfully remove and entomb the stone off the existing Cenotaph. On the grand opening of the Memorial Park, the veterans will march the plaques from the old Cenotaph site to the new memorial where they will be mounted onto the new Cenotaph. We will sell 5 x 8 and 8x12" bronze plaques to display on the large stones. The plaques will contain educational information pertinent to Canadian/Kimberley military history throughout the Park. Military Ames group desires to continue to solicite donations for work/materials for the Park. We are in contact with agencies that have expressed interest in providing support when park plans are approved for implemantation. We have developed a Park design and supplied those plans. We are willing to enthusiastically work with the City and contractors and share our expertise as subject matter experts, all on a volunteer basis. We will be soliciting media and government representation and support of the Cenotaph opening events. We have requested a National flag from Ottawa. Our vision is to help create an honoring and respectful Military Memorial Park that Kimberley and all of Canada can be proud of. Page 10 of 22
What the restored Cenotaph Symbolizes Shape of the crossed paths reflects the Christian background of Canada as well as the crosses that mark the graves of Canadians in cemetaries like Flander's Fields and others around the world. Granite 'headstones' symbolize the enduring memorial to fallen soldiers and provides surviving soldiers a place to reflect and remember. Upturned cenotaph lighting symbolizes eternal respect for those remembered. Page 11 of 22 The balance and symmetry of the proposed design reflects the orderly and functional traits of military organization.

Questions and Discussion Does the city believe this proposal 'workable'? Will City adopt these proposed plans? Will City support Military Ames providing SME and being active members for fund-raising, implementation planning and effort? Discussion, Questions and Suggestions from the city? Page 19 of 22 Military Ames Group questions:
Next Steps Schedule meeting with Committee of the Whole Request dedication of proposed lot to Memorial Park use Request sub-committee with city councillor head Request city parks staff estimate cost of project Page 20 of 22
Future Planning and Work Will there be a general contractor? If so, this should be actioned sooner rather than later. Who would be the project manager that Military Ames would be providing expertise and assistance to? Would it be possible to have a committee meeting regularly scheduled (at least every 2 weeks) to review and monitor plans and progress? Page 21 of 22 Would the city be open to a phase two for this project in a year's time. Items such as paved parking space and simple post and chain perimeter fence would be nice incremental improvements to consider to finish the park and accommodate potential improvements.
City of Kimberley Cenotaph Restoration Project Thank You to Everyone For This Session The Military Ames Group Looks forward to working with you And all the citizens of Kimberley Towards a truly Memorable Page 22 of 22 Kimberley Veterans Memorial Park
