2 Programs & City & Regional Planning Financial Aid Student Work At the Knowlton School of we have a profound awareness that we are educating and training students who will practice in a world which will be: more global, more urban, more technologically complex; one where change is certain; and one in which we will work on increasingly complex problems in an increasingly connected and collaborative environment. In addition to providing an education for a rapidly changing future in an increasingly complex world, is the notion of the designer s and planner s role in the world. We are part of a land grant university. Our strength, talent and unique characteristics come from being in and of the Midwest. The Midwest is a condition of abundances: abundance in resources, abundance in space, and abundance in the capacity for work. We participate in the culture, society and economy of that condition. But we YOU will also participate in both a now and a future that is about the world, as well. Everything that happens now, anywhere THERE affects us HERE, and the reverse. To be effective, means going out into the world and participating in, on and for the world.,, and Planning buildings, landscapes, cities, regions are material form created out of diverse interests, criteria and goals associated with often conflicting agendas; with physical and cultural sites; with use and behaviors; and with materials and techniques. Deeply related to the immediate social, cultural, economic and political systems, these disciplines represent a commitment to an expanded future. It is a future that we cannot foresee. But we do know that it is a future in which, as architects, landscape architects and planners, we will design buildings, landscapes, cities and things for a society whose issues, ideas and technologies are rapidly changing. Knowlton Hall, the structure that supports our educational mission, is an award-winning facility designed by the architects Mack Scogin and Merill Elam. At its base sits the materials and digital fabrication lab, a state-ofthe-art facility where technology and craft, experimentation and precision meet. The top floor holds the library, a contemplative, cerebral space with a collection of more than 30,000 volumes. Sandwiched between the lab and the library are the studios the heart of the school where thinking and making converge. Their continuous buzz suffuses the building with the palpable energy of intellectual inquiry. Here, the physical intersection of spaces spawns a creative intersection of thinking, making, writing, fabricating, debating and drawing, providing an incredibly fertile ground for the future of the discipline to be practiced.
