2 What is a Municipal Development Plan (MDP)? The Town s highest-level planning document Sets the long-term vision and key themes for the community A comprehensive road map for the next 20- to 30- years A tool to help guide land use and development Addresses issues pertaining to community, environment, social and economic development, culture, recreation, infrastructure, governance, leisure and others Required by the Government of Alberta (S. 632 of the Alberta Municipal Government Act) Is consistent with the Capital Region Growth Plan Builds on other important Town strategies, plans and documents Provides a rationale for decision-making to achieve the Town s vision Is typically reviewed every five years
3 Environmental Responsibility We have integrated social, environmental and economic goals to reinforce environmental protection and manage our environmental footprint. Stony Plain is a compact community, with a mix of uses, supported by strong, non-vehicular networks. We have fostered and retained our connections to open spaces and agricultural land. Recognize the Town s commitment to the health of the environment Enable renewable energy innovation Improve solid waste management Avoid noise impacts and unwanted light Address issues of community resiliency
4 Community Development As Stony Plain grew, progressed and prospered, we have maintained the strong sense of belonging, friendliness and characteristics that makes our community such a great place to live. We have housing choices for all. It feels like home because it s safe and healthy. Stony Plain, and its neighbourhoods, are attractive, well-maintained and have their own character. The strong local business community provides many employment opportunities. Our historic downtown thrives and is the heart of the community. 6 Supportive Infrastructure We actively maintain our infrastructure, including roads, water, storm and sewer systems and community facilities in a cost-effective manner. We have a comprehensive, interconnected network of transportation options, including an extensive trail system. Infrastructure is expanded hand-in-glove with development. Adopt a complete streets philosophy for street design Promote alternative transportation as a key part of the overall transportation strategy Prepare for a transit system Maintain our existing services Provide new services and utilities in newly developing areas
7 Governance and Partners The Municipality and the community have a strong connection, based on a shared Vision. Council creatively and carefully directs development that is consistent with community values and makes wise choices for effective resource use. We deliver infrastructure, municipal and recreational services within our financial capacity, to all young and old. 8 Growth Management and Land Use Plan The Capital Region Board s Growth Plan identifies Stony Plain as a Priority Growth Area, meaning the community is encouraged, and expected, to grow significantly over the next 20 years. The Capital Region Board s 2013 projections indicate an anticipated population of about , with approximately local jobs, by Adhere to parameters established by the Capital Region Board s Growth Plan Connectivity is a key determinant in the community s vision Explore land requirements for future developments Establish land use policies

10 Background Information The Capital Region Board s Growth Plan has identified Stony Plain as a Priority Growth Area within the Capital Region The preparation of the MDP followed a comprehensive planning process, which included significant input from, and consultation with, residents, businesses and other stakeholders Developing the MDP was a year-long process The MDP is typically reviewed and updated every five years; it was last updated in 2005 The MDP is approved by the Capital Region Board and Town Council Avenue info@stonyplain.com stonyplain.com
