2 2 Context Legado is an urban redevelopment project of m² in Montreal s hottest new neighborhood of Griffintown and is centered between Old Montreal and the hustle of downtown. Legado plays on the history of Griffintown being a hub of Innovation, as so many inventions and businesses in the early days of Montreal were created in its boundaries. We have taken best practices of urban planning, and built a building project where citizen design is primordial. We propose to build a vertical city that is inclusive, sustainable, inspiring, cross-generational and a proto-typing zone for a human scale city that welcomes local residents, small and large business, community groups and universities to live, play, work, and learn together. Legado will take a mixed development to the next level or integrating uses to play off each other to be the best of all worlds together. In collaboration with the Quartier Innovation and its partner Universities of Concordia, McGill, and ETS, we seek to include cross faculty pollination of the best new ideas of students to give opportunities to take research and study to the testing ground and market with direct access. Legado incorporates the 4 pillars of the QI to be a catalyst for job creation, and cross- sectorial collaboration the common rules of real estate. With the principles of Yield Development, we seek to redefine projects based on triple bottom line paradigms. All phases will be integrated not only to each other, but to the community that surrounds it. It is a call to action, a challenge to build differently and a question, If we could build anything, what would we build?. The aim of the Legado project is to set a new standard for development, architecture, place making and community building for Montreal. It does this through an innovative strategy that merges socio-cultural, economic, and sustainable environmental principles that will serve as capacity building for Griffintown. Legado s role is to act as a catalyst and condenser of sustainable and resilient development in Montreal, integrating innovative best practices to re-define the role that real estate can play in city-building. Legado s built form will serve to encourage and create interaction and exchange, while applying rigorous building performance standards, such as achieving an ambitious Net-Zero Energy strategy. Through conscious and inclusive planning, provision of much needed services, and innovative design, Legado will create a central core in the neighborhood, creating complete livability at the human scale. 2

3 3 What s in a Name? The name Legado means legacy in Spanish. Why did we choose it? We wish to create a new prototype for urban development projects that call to be inspired by our common history, celebrate inclusivity, and build for our future generations. It was selected in Spanish as an ode to the fact that the world is and should continue to celebrate our interconnectivity between communities and between nations. Can we, together, build our history of tomorrow? The Challenge: Art Inspired by the City Whether it be Impact Internships with McGill University, hosting ÉTS summer school on urban agriculture or conducting research with Concordia, GI Quo Vadis has set a precedent for collaboration between the private sector and universities. As GI Quo Vadis s next project, Legado will challenge artists, engineers, architects and urban planners to break through the lines that define traditional project modeling. On the site of Legado s game changing, mixed-used development, there are three placeholders that have been reserved as people-gathering plces that will tell the story of the project s purpose to build a human centric, inclusive and innovative development that values the area s history and seeks collaboration to build our common future. Inspired by Jan Gehl s work in his book Life Between Buildings, our goal is to showcase art and creativity linked to sustainability and resiliency of the City. We will together be creating a walkable and livable city that seeks to integrate the area around it by highlighting its public space. The public space will be a public promenade that has as a goal to tell the stories and inspire people to think differently. As an homage to these educational, artistic and innovative components of Legado, GI Quo Vadis is will build three unique, hallmark public art structures. We are launching a competition in collaboration with Concordia s Faculty of Arts, where the winner will be featured to build the art piece that they have designed. We are making a call to all the creative minds at Concordia that are interested in taking public art to the next level. Does city building inspire you? What are your ideas of what public space could be like to connect people sharing common value systems? If we could build the city of the future, what would be your part? 3

4 4 Your Public Art Design To design a public art permanent structure that will value the history of innovation in Griffintown, and plays it forward to collective creativity to inspire people to dream of the possible. We wish for you to take the goals and aspirations of Legado, and share your own dreams with us. We wish for your art piece to inspire people to live their lives better, together. The piece designed by Concordia University students will be situated on the western side of Legado s site, at the corner of Guy and William streets (Annex A). This round turning point and public space will be the focus point and central entry way to Legado 1. Its unique connectivity to the Canal, the historical intersection of past innovations and the link to Guy street to lead to Concordia University downtown campus will allow teams to let their creativity run free. We challenge teams of Concordia Art Students to work together along the following guidelines to design their public art structure. 1. The design must be inspired by the characteristics of the game of Jenga, a long-time inspiration for Legado s for its interlocking, transformable qualities. Conceiving Legado through the inspiration of the game Jenga was part of the initial steps of viewing the project s various systems as moveable, stackable and interchangeable between place, time, and function. It is a different way of cultivating architecture that has visually interesting, intriguing quality and stimulates the possible. The Jenga inspiration transcends just its concept of building blocks, but also is an interesting study of negative space - the space between the blocks. We challenge you to dream about the space between buildings, the space between us as individuals, the space between faculties. We wish for your public art space to be the focal point at the main entrance of public space in Legado 1 to be an invitation to the community at large to come and see the way urban planning and project development should be done. 2. The materials used in the construction of this monument should be inspired by the concept of zero waste and cradle to cradle development. Therefore, we wish the art structure to pull materials from the buildings currently on site that will be demolished. It should show old materials often used in traditional building and inspire new ways to use materials of the past and incorporate materials of the future - in sustainable terms. 4

Participants have the opportunity should they wish to meet with the development team of GI Quo Vadis, citizens, architects, public planners, artists, and more, in order to gain the insight and knowledge needed to conceive their submission. 4. The submission must be a collaborative piece, the product of team work, and must include: a. PDF files of proposed design ad well as printed plans and sketches b. Outline of materials used in the design, including realistic cost projections for building the art piece c. Presentation of the project, including a statement of intention, sources of inspiration, the purpose of the art piece and a description of what the art piece represents to them and what they wish to showcase to the community. d. Biographies of the team members (250 words max) 5. Participants will have four months from the date of the competition s launch to submit their proposal by sending materials to 5524 St Patrick, suite 316, Montreal, Quebec H4E 1A8 attention Natalie Voland. Three finalists will be chosen, and will be granted three additional months to clarify, adapt and solidify their project proposal based on comments and suggestions from the expert panel that will be resubmitted to them. 7. The winning group will have the opportunity to work with the developing team, establish a timeline and bring their design to life as a permanent installation, with the description of the artists and the project highlighted. During the building and design process there will be an opportunity to film the development of the art piece, and its construction will be honored with the inauguration press conference and official launch. 6 6 Conclusion- The development team of Legado will undertake to mass the fund needed for the building of the structure. The winning team will get a prize of $5,000 and will be permanently credited with their design by a ceremonial plaque on the structure. The team will also benefit from working with the development team and the associated media coverage of the structure inauguration. A feature of the work will also be on the website of Legado. A video associated to the making of will be produced and used as a promotional tool to inspire others to value art in development projects. The winning team will also be featured in a workshop discussing their process and the importance in public art at the Salon 1861 that will be open to thought leaders, universities, non profits, small and large business leaders and local citizens.
