1 2 3 Sense System for Classrooms RightLight Daylight Harvesting R-Occ Room & Row Occ Sensor S-Occ Small Space Occ Sensor Problem: Lighting Classrooms properly when they re occupied, shutting the lights off when they re not. Solution: Prudential fixtures fitted with integrated lighting controls. They incorporate occupancy sensors that switch off lights in unoccupied rooms, and daylight harvesting sensors that adjust light level automatically to dramatically cut energy use in classrooms. Wave2 Pru15 Our Wave2 and Pru15 fixtures meet or exceed CHPS (Collaborative for High Performance Schools) standards for glare-free lighting, teacher control, and energy efficiency. Knowing the right light. Prudential Ltg fixtures have long been a favorite choice of architects and designers seeking performance and value in a classroom lighting solution. Now, there s another reason to put Prudential at the top of your list: the Sense System. To meet the challenge of cutting energy costs and helping to reduce emissions, the system employs advanced technologies, including solar-power for its PIR occupancy sensors. Sense is able to determine whether a classroom is occupied or not, and deactivate the lighting as needed. Natural daylight is harvested when available, automatically dimming the lighting from the appropriate fixtures. And because the system is wireless, it saves both material and manpower costs in its installation. Planning Information. Motion Sensors: Ceiling mounted occupancy sensor has a walking motion radius of just over 20 feet of coverage, or about 1500 SF in a space with a 9-ft ceiling. Sensor is solar powered, with the charge lasting about 48 hours. Sensor is set to power off all lamps if the room is unoccupied for 10 minutes. Luminaires are manually switched on at the classroom door, or teacher control switch, so that lights do not trip on unintentionally. 20 10 0 10 20 Daylight Harvesting Sensors: Fixture integrated daylight harvesting sensors should be located over typical work surfaces, within 6-10 feet of the window. A typical daylighting zone is usually 15 feet in from the window wall. Specific site conditions will dictate the designation of dimming zones. If fixture rows are parallel to windows, one daylight sensor can control the entire window row. Inside fixture row may or may not need a daylight sensor, depending on room conditions. One sensor can control up to twenty 0-10V dimming ballasts. In the Sense System, only the outer lamp rows are controlled by the daylight sensors. How to order Sense System. Transforming classroom lighting with the energy savings of our Sense System controls is easy. It only takes a few steps, outlined in detail below. Before you can specify the right solution for your needs, you ll need to start by determining the type of rows in each classroom. Are they parallel or perpendicular to the windows? Are the windows high? Once you ve identified your particular scenario, you re ready to specify the appropriate luminaires and control systems. Determining Row Types Scenario A: Rows are parallel to the windows; Inner corridor side row is outside of the daylight dimming zone. Only the center lamp row (A/V mode) dims manually from Teacher Control Station. Window row has one daylight sensor controlling the outer lamp rows for the entire fixture row. Center lamps for both rows dim manually at the Teacher Control Station. 0DD no daylight dimming; center lamp A/V dimming only. 1DD one zone daylight dimming - entire row. 0DD 1DD Scenario B: Rows are perpendicular to the windows; Each fixture row has one sensor controlling the outer lamp rows within the dimming zone. The rest of the outer lamp rows do not dim. Step1: Specify your luminaire. For all the features of the Sense System, specify Wave2 or Pru15, with 3 lamp rows, D3C distribution, dual circuiting, and the INTC (integrated controls) option. Indicate any other options such as extended cable lengths, acrylic dust cover, or emergency batteries. If the A/V lighting mode feature is not necessary for the project needs, the other features of the system: the wireless switching, day light harvesting, and occupancy sensing are still available when a 2-lamp system is specified. Choose Your Luminaire. Any of the Prudential fixtures shown on the opposite page can be fitted with RightLight Daylight Harvesting technology. So make the selection that s the ideal fixture to help fulfill your aesthetic vision and functional requirements. RightLight comes integrated into our fixtures from the factory. There s no additional wiring to the fixture, and power packs or DALI ballasts are not required. Our fixtures arrive on the jobsite pre-calibrated to dim when light levels reach 45fc. If adjustments are necessary, it s easy to do in the field. Just turn the bezel, and the photocell s aperture opens or closes to change the calibration. Prudential fixtures fitted with RightLight technology are an affordable way to create multiple daylighting zones. The system can operate up to twenty 0-10V ballasts on one sensor. Determine your Dimming zones. To determine the number of dimming zones, general design guidelines are to locate the sensor over characteristic work surfaces, approximately 6 to 10 from the window. The daylit zone is typically within 15 of the window. Scenario A: One Dimming Zone - One Sensor Rows parallel to window wall. Non-dimming Zone In this example, a typical classroom layout, fixture rows are parallel to window wall. Entire row is controlled by a single sensor Dimming Zone Daylit zone/15 feet from window wall Scenario B: One Dimming Zone - Two Sensors Rows perpendicular to window wall. To help determine the number of dimming zones, the general design guidelines are to locate the sensor over work surfaces, approximately 6 to 10 from the window. The daylit zone is usually within 15 of the window. In this example, fixture rows are perpendicular to window wall. Each row is controlled separately, with one sensor each within the dimming zone. Dimming Zone Non-dimming Zone Daylit zone/15 feet from window wall Scenario C: Two Dimming Zones - Four Sensors High window wall. Since daylight entering into an interior falls off in intensity the further it enters into the space, sometimes it is necessary to create more than one dimming zone. In this example, fixture rows are perpendicular to a high window wall. The result is 2 dimming zones and 1 non-dimming zone.
