Fast Facts July 20, 2015 Volume 3 Issue 11 Support Services Finance: The City s Fiscal Year 2016 Proposed Budget is now available on the City s Website. On June 16 th, members of the Fire and Emergency Services Department were honored to present an appreciation plaque to Brian Bair, owner of Altman s A/C, for his company s support of the department s fundraising efforts on behalf of the St. Baldrick s Foundation this past March. Through the support of community members like Mr. Bair, the department was able to contribute around $9,000 this year to help support research in fighting childhood cancer. It is equipped with an alarm that sounds whenever the door to the cabinet opens, and should cause anyone in the area to check to see that it s not being tampered with for reasons other than emergency. The alarm will stop sounding once the cabinet door is closed. Following a City Manager Quarterly Training session during which Fire and Emergency Services provided CPR/AED (Automatic External Defibrillation) training, Assistant City Manager Abbate realized the importance of not only knowing CPR but also having an AED unit at City Hall for the employees and citizens who frequent the facility. Fire Chief Woodward was tasked with making it happen and City Hall now has its own AED unit mounted in the lobby area (see picture). Using this AED as is simple as TURNING IT ON and FOLLOWING THE VERBAL PROMPTS!!! CPR helps maintain vital blood flow to the heart and brain and increases the amount of time that an electric shock from a defibrillator can be effective. The presence of an AED and quick actions by those trained in CPR could potentially save a life! Additional CPR/AED training will be provided by EMS/Training Chief Greg Sutton in the near future for other City Hall employees. On July 1, 2015, Titusville Fire & Emergency Services visited Titusville Public Library as part of their Heroes Reading Program. The first reading for this day were for ages two to three. The focus of the book read was on Fire Drills. Station 11 s crew, consisting of Lieutenant Matt Johnson, Acting Driver Operator Ben Lees and Firefighter Roman Lane, provided the reading for the event. On Wednesday, July 15 th, Titusville Police Lieutenant Tom House and Public Affairs Coordinator, Amy Matthews attended the "Christmas in July" Health Fair event at Temple Baptist Church benefiting Titusville Seniors. The Giving the Gift of Health event provided attendees with free health screenings and information on local healthcare services & businesses. Lt. House was on hand to provide information about Project Lifesaver and answer questions. Pictured is Driver-Operator John Hustoles who is rappelling from the side of a building. Ropes and various knots are used in a wide variety of applications in firefighting work, including rescues of victims and also firefighters. During the week of July 9 th he attended a Rope Rescue training course to prepare for the in-house training of our personnel, using our new training tower (once completed). Attending the same preparatory training during the prior month were EMS/Training Chief Greg Sutton, Operations Chief Chad Lindquist and Battalion Chief Chris Threlkeld. Titusville Fire and Emergency Services is pleased to report that Titusville's PPC classification through the Insurance Service Organization's auditing process has enhanced from a Class 4 to a Class 3/3X rating. This is exciting because Titusville s rating has remained static at a Class 4 rating for the past quarter of a century. Doubly significant is, nationally, our city now ranks in the top 6% of the 48,855 communities evaluated by ISO. One of the functions offered by the Insurance Service Office (ISO) is to provide reliable, up-to-date information about a community s fire-protection services for residential and commercial properties through regular auditing of primary emergency firefighting categories. Auditing critical firefighting component provides an objective, countrywide standard that helps fire departments in planning and budgeting for facilities, equipment, and training to improve its firefighting services. Classifying our community s ability to suppress fires may also result in lower fire insurance premiums for our community members. On June 24, 2015, Titusville Fire & Emergency Services, along with Titusville Police Department, visited Brookdale Senior Living for an Appreciation Cookout by Brookdale & Vitas Healthcare for all Titusville First Responders: Fire, Police & Emergency Services. After completing over 300 hours of training prior to the event, Lt. Joey Moyer, Sgt. Celestial McBride, Sgt. Brandon Hayner, Ptm. Sevan McBride, Ptm. Andrew Martin, Ptm. Wil Ware and Ptm. Collin Fritts were selected to represent Post 486 in the competitions. On Tuesday, July 14, 2015, Titusville Police Department held the swearing in ceremony of their newest officer, Jessica George. She will finalize her in-house training in the coming week and then begin the field-training program. We wish Officer George much success in her new career. In the last FFF, Human Resources did the challenging to rally support of the school children of our community through donation of school supplies. Donate today and support the future of our youngest community members! On June 24, 2015, North Brevard Moms visited Fire Station 11 for a tour. The group toured the inside of the station and was given an engine display of both Engine #11 and the department s 1925 American LaFrance Fire Engine. Fire safety and prevention topics covered during the visit included fire basics: Know 2 Ways Out; Exit Drills in the Home (E.D.I.T.H.); Stop, Drop, and Roll; Crawl Low and Go, etc. Station 11 s crew consisted of Lieutenant Michael Abernathy, Driver Operator Scott Einkopf, and Firefighter Ryan Birge. Acting Battalion Chief Tiffany Callahan and Life Safety Specialist Heather Gilmore assisted with the event. A total of 32 children and adults attended the station tour. On June 26, 2015, Titusville Fire & Emergency Services visited Mrs. Pat s Wee Care Center as part of their Heroes Reading Program. The Heroes Reading Program is a program that allows firefighters to maintain interaction with the children of our community. The focus of the books read to the children this week was Outdoor Fire Safety. Station 10 s crew, consisting of Lieutenant Jeremy House, Acting Driver Operator Olivier Harper and Firefighter Iain McFarland provided the reading for the event. The Harry T. Moore Social Service Center hosted the 2 nd, semi-annual Outreach Event in partnership with the Department of Children and Families and 19 other agencies! This event assisted citizens interested in applying for various social services i.e. Food Stamps, Cash, Medicaid, Social Security Disability, healthcare insurance for low income, youth training and employment programs, opportunities to employment and employment training with Goodwill Good Jobs, and much more. On June 26, 2015, Titusville Fire & Emergency Services visited the Kids Place as part of their Heroes Reading Program. The Heroes Reading Program is a program that allows firefighters to maintain interaction with the children of our community. The focus of the books read to the children this week was Fire Prevention Basics. Station 13 s crew, consisting of Lieutenant Dave Cody, Driver Operator Shawn Holbrook and Firefighter Timothy Hammond provided the reading for the event. Life Safety Specialist Heather Gilmore was also present. Forty children and teachers attended the event. On June 30, 2015 Titusville Fire & Emergency Services visited the Kids Place located at Indian River City United Methodist Church. Station 13 s crew consisting of Acting Lieutenant Bobby Crocker, Driver Operator Adam Vaknin and Firefighter Shaun Fisher, taught Fire Prevention topics. Basics. Life Safety Specialist Heather Gilmore also assisted with the event. Topics discussed were the important number to call if there use in an emergency (9-1-1), what is an emergency, Know 2 Ways Out, Stop Drop & Roll, Crawl Low and Go and more. Firefighter Fisher also donned and doffed his bunker gear to show to show the children that firefighters are their friends and no not to be afraid of him. Fire safety and fire prevention topics were covered during the visit. Station 11 s crew consisted of Lieutenant Lisa Ford, D/O John Hustoles, and Firefighter Joe Kohutek. Life Safety Specialist Heather Gilmore assisted with the event. A total of 6 children and adults attended the station tour. Where Does Your Water Come From? Nine students and their teacher from Mrs. Pat s Wee Care summer program can all answer enthusiastically that it comes from next door, at the Mourning Dove Water Production Plant. During their tour of the Mourning Dove, the kids learned about drinking water sources, water treatment, the importance of water conservation, and how they can conserve water. Maureen Phillips, Water Conservation & Public Outreach Manager, organized the tour and taught the kids about water, its treatment and water conserservation. Ronald Ferrer, Chief Operator, lead the kids through the treatment areas of the facility. After the tour was completed, the children each received conservation items to remind them of their learning experience. Tours of water resources facilities are available for groups of five or more and have been enjoyed by school children, scout troops, and environmental groups for over thirteen years.
