Northern Ireland Sustainable Planning Awards mediation of space making of place 1.
RTPI NI Branch and RSPB NI are hosting joint sustainable planning awards for the second year, to promote awareness and implementation of sustainable planning issues in Northern Ireland. This year there are three categories to reflect the breadth of good practice and diversity of projects brought to light last year. The awards aim to recognise the efforts and achievements of truly sustainable development whether in rural or urban areas, large or small in scale, new development or regeneration, or from the public, private or community sectors. We will look beyond purely physical outcomes to value innovative plans, planning processes, technical challenges and the establishment and improvements of cross-sectoral relationships. We are joined by award sponsors Planning Service, the Department of Social Development (DSD) and Action Renewables, with additional sponsorship from the Department of Finance and Personnel (DFP) and Carvill Group. Entries are now invited for the 2008/09 RTPI / RSPB NI sustainable planning awards in three categories: Sustainable Communities and Regeneration schemes involving regeneration and strong community participation including proposals for sustainable, mixed use developments which balance and integrate the social, economic, environmental and resource needs of the community. Sponsored by DSD. Rural Areas and the Natural Environment all aspects of planning in rural areas, often with benefits for the protection and enhancement of the natural environment including responses to the new agendas for landowners and farmers. Sponsored by Planning Service. Urban Development and the Built Environment projects incorporating sustainable solutions to issues arising in urban areas, such as transport, design and space. Sponsored by Action Renewables.
2. Judging criteria To merit selection for short-listing, entries must demonstrate achievements that have advanced the science and art of town planning for the benefit of the community, or provide a good example of the beneficial impact of positive planning. In evaluating such achievements the following aspects, as appropriate, will be taken into account and should be specifically addressed in your entry submission: Enhancement of the physical environment How the scheme has addressed all aspects of sustainable development Originality of the achievement or approach The key issues and problems that needed to be overcome Quality of the professional work involved in project design, the development of planning concepts and the application of planning techniques Extent to which the achievement may serve as a model for work elsewhere or as a basis for the development of further related schemes The role played by the planner working in partnership with other agencies All types of planning activities are eligible, including plans, processes, projects or completed schemes. The scale of the project is not necessarily relevant to the evaluation of the achievement. All projects must have received planning consent by the Awards submission date (14th November 2008). Awards may be made to local authorities, consultants, community groups, developers, public agencies, partnerships or other teams judged to merit such recognition. Judging process The awards are judged by an experienced panel of practitioners. Judging takes place in the following sequence: 1 2 3 4 STAGE 1 The judging panel will consider the project summary STAGE 2 Short-listing of entries for site visits or submission of further information STAGE 3 Announcement of finalists (up to three per award category) December 2008 STAGE 4 Finalists to showcase their entries at the RTPI/RSPB NI sustainable planning awards ceremony in February 2008 The panel reserves the right to move entries to a different award category.
