Sprucing up your Home s Curb Appeal: Border interest

Assessing your home s current curb appeal from 1 to 10! 1 being less than optimum 10 being the best curb appeal! Keep in mind the big picture of your home and yard. All aspects must fit together to yield the best results.

Assessing your home s current curb appeal from 1-10 VISION FOR YOUR YARD 1. Decrease lawn area? Re-establish type of grass? 2. Add specimen trees? 3. Plant new shrubs and/or re-design flower beds? 4. Change type or color of mulch? 5. Install or remove walkway? 6. Add stone/brick retaining wall? 7. Paint or replace front door? 8. Add or improve lighting of landscape or home? 8. Other?

Assessing your home s current curb appeal from 1-10 Vision to reflect 4 Seasons Virginia enjoys SPRING: flowering shrubs, trees, and bulbs SUMMER: annuals, perennials, flowering shrubs, and trees FALL: annuals, perennials, flowering shrubs, and trees WINTER: flowering shrubs (deciduous hollies, Sasanqua camellias, etc. Interesting bark and scaffolding of trees (Crepe myrtle, Mahonia, Nandina, River birches, etc.)

Assessing your home s current curb appeal from 1-10 ENTRANCE OF YOUR HOME The entrance for your home sets the stage. It should be obvious and as inviting as possible. Is there more than one door on the front of your home? If so, is it obvious which serves as the entrance door? Are the front door and surrounding areas bright and inviting? 1. Color of door 2. Numbers easy to read 3. Sufficient lighting 4. Steps and rails safe and attractive 5. Mortar pointed 6. Mailbox and mailbox area 7. Security: Size and plant placement

LAWN: mowing, edging, over-seeding, fertilizing, liming, dethatching, watering, pest and disease control, and being properly maintained?

Right Plant, Right Place Right Plant Size Now? Five years from now? Growth rate Soil (ph)/drainage Sunny/shade requirements Wind tolerance? Water requirements Native vs. exotic or nonindigenous Right Place Survive vs. Thrive Do not try to fit a round peg into a square space! Do your research - Books and/or Internet - Garden center - Visit gardens (LGB, Maymont, etc. ) - Extension Office of Henrico County

Assessing your home s current curb appeal from 1-10 Your Yard Realize that your yard may contain many microcosms! Soil composition may differ throughout the yard Need a current soil test? Sun and shade areas? Grading? Drainage? Irrigation? Erosion? Current plantings? Limitations? (Fences, sheds, power lines, others?)

Assessing your home s current curb appeal from 1-10 BUDGET FOR TIME: Timeline for completion and maintenance. TIME: Of the 168 hours in a week (approximately 112 waking hours), how many do you intend spending to reach your vision or plan? Be realistic! How much time is needed for weekly upkeep of yard and home? Will it be DIY or will professional help be needed?

Assessing your home s current curb appeal from 1-10 TIME AND MONEY BUDGETS REALISTIC? SCOPE OF PROJECT: Consider your time and money resources over the next five years: TIME: Retirement may yield more time, but provide less money. HELP: Can you do the work alone? Do you have a friend or relative to help? HEALTH: May impact both time and money available for home maintenance.

Assessing your home s current curb appeal from 1-10 TIME AND MONEY BUDGETS REALISTIC? SCOPE OF PROJECT: Now that you have considered many of the aspects of improving your home s curb appeal: Do you need to re-evaluate your vision or plans? Remember that small changes can yield a big impact if well planned and executed!

Revised Plan Three Aspects to consider Think of what someone approaching your home sees first and concentrate on those things. 1. Front door: Paint or replace Deadbolt locks Windows shutters (locks, screens, access from outside) Numbers Lighting 2. Walkways 3. Plantings around front door (pots/urns or planted in the ground)
