Health, Safety and Welfare Policy Statement It is Sadler s Wells Trust s aim to pursue a policy that provides and maintains a safe and healthy working environment for all its employees. Additionally it will endeavor to ensure all work carried out by SWT employees does not affect the health and safety of anyone else on the premises or in the vicinity, such as visiting companies staff and performers, theatre patrons, contractors and members of the general public. The objectives of the Trust s Health and Safety Policy are: To provide standards of health, safety and welfare which comply fully with the relevant statutory requirements and official codes of practice. To provide staff with the information, instruction, training and supervision they need to work safely. To develop safety awareness amongst all staff. To maintain a safe and healthy work place and safe systems and methods of work, particularly in the stage risk area; the use of electrical equipment or systems and the manual handling of heavy loads. To provide safe means of access to and egress from places of work. To make staff aware of their individual responsibility to take all reasonable care for the safety of themselves and others and to co-operate with management in all matters of safety. To encourage full and effective consultation with staff on safety matters. To monitor and assess the ongoing and changing risks within the workplace. The company operates in an environment with all the risks associated with an operational theatre/major events venue. It is the Trust s clear objective to identify, manage and reduce, to an absolute minimum, any workplace risks thereby safeguarding staff and visitors alike whilst maintaining Sadler s Wells reputation for care and excellence in all its areas of operation. 3
Health and Safety Management Sadler s Wells responsibilities Responsibility for the overall effectiveness of the Health and Safety policy remains with the Chief Executive, Director of H&S and H&S Adviser. The implementation of policy is delegated to heads of department /Line managers within their area of authority. This includes responsibility for Risk Assessments, designed to eliminate or reduce potential hazards within the main Theatre and public spaces, to ensure conformity with current Health and Safety regulations and approved codes of practice and guidance. These Risk Assessments are made available to all staff and are implemented accordingly. Schools /Youth Groups/ Educational Parties Responsibilities Responsibilities also rest with organisers/supervisors of educational parties, especially those containing young school children, to ensure so far as reasonably practicable, that they maintain control of their group and prevent unsafe acts or omissions that would effect the safety or health of the individuals within their charge or other visitors and staff. Accidents and First Aid Report all accidents and medical emergencies to a member of Sadler s Wells staff who have a list of the following and will contact the appropriate personnel to deal with the situation as required; A list of First Aid trained personnel Contact nos. for local doctors/nearest hospital. Fire Instructions, Evacuation, and Emergency Brief In the event of a fire alarm evacuation Listen to the instructions given over the voice alarm the Fire Evacuation alarm is a two-tone siren. Evacuate the building following the Running Man green signs which lead to the final exit door. Wheelchair disabled should proceed to the nearest refuge point by following the green wheelchair signs. The blind and deaf should be made aware of their exit route and/or be escorted. Obey fire alarm instructions and listen to Sadler s Wells staff, they will be there to guide you safely from the building. 5
Security Listen for the alert tone and broadcast. Evacuation may be to external assembly points or internal safe havens (Auditorium) depending upon the threat. Should a member of your party discover a suspicious object or receive any sort of threat report it to a member of Sadler s Wells staff or to Stage Door immediately. General Assessment of Risk The potential for Health and Safety risks to children and members of the teaching staff in any of the public areas of the Peacock Theatre is minimal. As would be expected care must be taken on the stairs and all staff must ensure that they are used in a sensible and orderly fashion, especially during performance times when large groups of people are using the premises. Provided that at all times parties are fully supervised by their individual school staff members, all Peacock Theatre public areas are considered as safe for the use intended. 6
