The Willows 116 Tuffley Avenue Gloucester GL1 5NS
Seller Insight Situated on a quiet road not far from the bustling town centre of Gloucester is The Willows, a large and beautifully presented family home that was built in the early 1930s. I purchased this house seventeen years ago, and at that time my intention was actually to downsize, says the owner, however during my time here I ve expanded and extended the property to such an extent that I d say I ve more than doubled it in size. I was moving from the countryside, so I was keen to create a country home within the town, and I d say that that is exactly what I have done. The house was extended to the side, up into the roof and I ve had an enormous conservatory added, which spans the entire width of the property and overlooks the gorgeous south-facing garden. The property has definitely changed quite dramatically but all of the work has been carried out in a very sympathetic manner, so it retains all of its wonderful character and charm; it s actually rather hard to tell old from new. I d describe it as a very elegant house and one that has a wonderfully homely feel. The garden was something of a blank canvas when I first came here, so over the years I ve done an enormous amount of work to transform it into a very beautiful space, continues the owner. It now consists of a sweeping lawn, lots of roses and well established herbaceous borders, and I ve also had a ruin built right at the very end, which is a lovely feature and one that adds a bit of interest to the space. There are places to sit, eat and relax, and because it s surrounded by wonderfully mature shrubs and trees, it s extremely private. My favourite room would probably be the conservatory, says the owner. They are usually considered to be rooms that are primarily used during the summer months, however mine is used all year round. It overlooks the south-facing garden and has under-floor heating, so it s extremely warm and cosy, even on the most inclement of days. It s a wonderful place to sit on a Sunday morning with a cup of coffee and the papers. I was working in London when I first moved here, so having the station just a mile up the road was wonderfully convenient, says the owner. And although the house and garden feel quite countrified, I benefit from having a wonderful array of shops and amenities within striking distance, so I d say that I enjoy the best of both worlds. I also have an integral double garage, which has been very useful, says the owner. I can drive in through the electric door and access the house straight through the utility room. It s a godsend when it s pouring with rain. What I shall miss most is really indefinable, says the owner. It s a house that is incredibly welcoming, so much so that it almost seems to embrace you the minute you set food inside. I m not sure I ll ever find another quite like it. * * These comments are the personal views of the current owner and are included as an insight into life at the property.
