O W N E R ' S M A N U A L affordable audio for the critical listener Nomad Outdoor & Surround Speakers Congratulations on your purchase of this Nomad speaker system and thank you for your selection of Parasound. This speaker system is designed to provide you with high-fidelity reproduction in a wide variety of home theater and outdoor applications. The polypropylene woofer and ferrofluid treated wide dispersion tweeter have been carefully constructed to resist the effects of hostile weather conditions. The cabinets are hermetically sealed and specially coated to resist the elements in harsh environments. Because high performance and long life depend on proper installation and wiring please take a few minutes to read these instructions thoroughly. Unpacking Save your carton and the packing inserts for future safe transport in case you move or your speakers ever require shipping for repair. The white printed carton is not itself strong enough for safe shipping so you must place it into the additional outer carton before shipment. Be sure to save the allen wrench included with the Nomad 10 it will be necessary for mounting. Choosing a Location Placement affects the performance of all loudspeakers. All Nomad surround/outdoor speakers are compact for easy placement. If you are using your speakers outdoors there are additional precautions you should take to extend their useful life. Their bass response will be enhanced by the proximity of nearby walls or ceilings. To obtain maximum bass output locate each speaker near the junction of two walls or where two walls and a ceiling meet. The trade-off of mounting them in this way is a slight amount of sonic coloration added by the room itself. However in most cases the added coverage and the enhanced bass makes this an acceptable compromise. Your Nomad speakers will sound best when they are placed vertically preferably with the tweeter on top. However when mounting them under an overhang or near the ceiling invert the speaker so the tweeter is below the woofer. This mounting scheme reduces high frequency reflections and provides better bass reinforcement. If you place the speakers horizontally mount them in a mirror image configuration with both tweeters on the inside and both woofers on the outside. Outdoor speaker placement makes it nearly impossible to hear the same level of bass as you would enjoy indoors where the interior boundaries reinforce low frequencies. Never drive the speaker to attempt to reach the same outdoor levels you would expect from your main indoor speakers. This could damage the speakers and/ or amplifier. If you hear distortion this is a warning to turn down the volume right away. If you think your amplifier is underpowered to adequately drive the speakers outside consult your Parasound dealer for advice. A rather large listening area may require more than a single pair of speakers to reach satisfactory volume levels. -1-

Surround Speaker Location Your Nomad speakers are superb for surround sound. There is a lot of flexibility in locating your Nomad speakers for surround sound. They should be placed where you cannot localize the sound they reproduce. Rather they should give you a feeling of sonic envelopment--as if you are there. You don t necessarily need to aim the surround speakers at the listening position. You may want to try aiming them at the wall or even the ceiling to increase reflected sound to help diminish image localization. Expect some experimentation with surround speaker placement to yield the best results. Outdoor Location Considerations Nomad speakers are designed to resist most weather conditions with minimal sonic deterioration. However please observe these precautions to extend their life. 1. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight to prevent the speaker being subjected to heat and ultraviolet radiation. Direct sunlight will eventually dry out the materials in the speaker drivers and fade the pigments in the paint finish. 2. Avoid extended exposure to salt air to prevent the speaker being subjected to its extremely corrosive effects. If you live near the coast locate your speakers so you can easily disconnect them clean them off with clear water and store them inside when not in use. Speakers showing evidence of extended exposure to salt air or salt water corrosion are not covered under warranty. 3. Never locate your speakers directly on the ground where they can sit in a pool of water. This will eventually break down the rust treatment and damage the cabinet. If you must place them near the ground place something underneath them to raise them above puddles. 4. Never submerge the speakers or attempt to use them underwater. Not only will this seriously damage the speakers but you will expose yourself to the risk of electrocution. 5. Do not locate the speaker near any heat source such as an exposed radiator or heating duct. Nomad Three-Six Mounting Brackets The mounting brackets included with your Nomad speakers are the safest way to secure the speakers so they are out of reach of curious children or the unwanted attention of visitors. Position each bracket and screw or bolt it into place before you mount the speaker to it. Make sure the hardware you use will reliably support the weight of the speaker. Remove the small round sticker at both ends of the speakers to expose the threaded holes. Gently slide the speaker into the bracket and screw the plastic knob through the bracket and into the threaded hole in the end of each speaker one at a time. It's not necessary to apply excessive force on the knobs to hold the speaker in place. Nomad Ten Mounting Brackets The unique stainless steel mounting brackets included with the Nomad Ten allow you to mount the speaker in a variety of angles and positions. -2-

Mounting the Bracket to the Wall 1. Determine the location on the wall where you will mount the Nomad Ten 2. Drill two horizontal pilot holes 3 1/8" apart 3. Fasten the bracket to the wall with hardware that will reliably support the weight of the speaker. Make sure the cross member of the bracket is facing up. 4. Rotate the bracket to the desired position and fasten the bracket to the wall. Mounting Nomad Ten to its Bracket 1. Screw the four allen screws partially into the threaded inserts in back of the Nomad Ten cabinet and slide the speaker onto the mounting bracket. The weight of the speaker should cause the four screws to drop into the smaller portion of keyhole openings. 2. Once you have properly seated the speaker onto its the bracket tighten the four screws with the supplied 5 mm allen wrench. 3. Once the Nomad Ten is securely seated in the bracket it can also be horizontally mounted. Nomad 10 mounting bracket 4 Allen bolts screw into back of cabinet. Tighten with provided 5 mm allen wrench Bracket angle adjustment screw Toggle or anchor bolts secured into wall Note that screws mounted in back of cabinet drop into lower section of keyed hole of bracket Speaker Terminal Wall Hookup Mounting the Nomad Ten to a Wall using the Supplied Brackets Run an appropriate length of wire to each speaker. Next strip about a 1/4 of insulation from each speaker wire and twist the exposed strands. If practical you should tin the speaker wire with molten solder to prevent oxidation. Insert the wire into the correct speaker terminal so the insulation is snug against the back of the terminal housing. Be sure to maintain correct + and - polarity for proper phasing. Most wires have a ridge or pattern on one of the conductors to help facilitate this. Use at least 16 AWG wire to assure adequate power transfer from the amplifier. If the installation requires wire to be exposed to direct sunlight or buried you may want to use special underground/uv resistant wire. After you make the connections seal around both speaker terminals with silicone and also the hole where the wires enter any exterior house walls to prevent cold air and water leaks. -3-

Maintenance Keep your Nomad speakers clean and free of debris such as leaves and dirt. It is a good idea to wipe the outside of the cabinet with a soft cloth and a quick application of spray or paste wax to keep the finish looking new. Do not remove the grille to expose the speaker drivers or disassemble the cabinets. If the paint gets accidentally chipped it should be touched up immediately with automotive paint to prevent the spread of oxidation. In Case of Trouble If you suspect a problem with your Nomad speakers first recheck all your connections. If only one speaker is inoperative the trouble may be caused by another component or even a defective hookup cable. We suggest you contact your authorized Parasound Dealer or Installer or call Parasound Technical Service. We may be able to suggest diagnostic tests you can easily perform yourself and which will save you a lot of trouble. If it is determined that the speaker should be returned to Parasound or an Authorized Warranty Center for inspection and possible servicing call for the location of a Warranty Center near you. If you choose to send it to Parasound you must call or write to obtain a Return Authorization number. You will be asked to repack the unit in its original packing and an outer cardboard carton for proper protection in transit. We will give you shipping instructions. We must refuse units that arrive without the correct Return Authorization number an unsuitable shipping carton or that have evidence of improper internal packing. We cannot accept collect shipments. After repair under warranty the unit will be returned to you prepaid.
