Sell Your Orchids at the Fall Show If your orchid garden or greenhouse is overflowing, dividing and/or selling some of your plants at the fall show is a good way to make room for more orchids! Or if others have envied some of your plants at show and tell maybe you could make a little money by dividing that specimen. Members (only members please) of COS are encouraged to bring plants from their collections to sell. Here are a few guidelines for sales: 1. Plants should be disease and pest free. 2. Fill out sales tags as completely as possible (they are included with this newsletter). Plants that have a picture attached and have as much information about the plant as possible sell better. Attach the tag to your plant securely with masking tape or on a stick. If you have Show Off Your Orchids! One of the major attractions of an Orchid Show is the members display. As usual this year we will have a special display of many varieties of blooming orchids at the Community Church of the Monterey Peninsula where we have our meetings. In order to create the splendor of orchids for which the Carmel Orchid Society is famous, we need your contributions! The display will be assembled on Thursday afternoon in the Hall where several plants, it is always a good idea for you to keep a list of the names and prices of the plants you bring. 3. COS will keep 25% of each sale as a part of our fundraiser. your plants accordingly, but remember that affordable plants sell first. Volunteers who will be at the sales table will not change prices on your plants, so if your plant is not selling, you may want to stop by the table during the show to change the price. 4. Plants can be brought to the church (show location) on Thursday afternoon, Nov. 9. If you cannot bring them until Friday, we will set them out for sale in the order as they are received. You will need to pick up any unsold plants at 4PM on Saturday. I look forward to finding some real gems to purchase among the member s orchids! Janette Ford, Member s sales chair we have our meetings. Plants should be brought to the Hall after noon on November 9th. The show opens at 9am on Friday morning, and the display must be in place. Members are requested to bring their plants in an attractive container or basket. The plants must have the leaves cleaned and free of pests as the volunteers will not be able to do this. The Society volunteers will place a sign on the plant stating its name, lineage, etc. If you cannot bring the plants in yourself, please contact Carol Easton at Page 4 October 2017

595-5254 and we will try to arrange a pickup. Last minute additions may be accepted before 9am on Friday if space is available. At the conclusion of the show the display will be disassembled and the plants will be available from where the Display Area tables were located during the show. No plants are available until 4:15 pm on Saturday, November 11th. The Guidelines that have been adopted for the Carmel Orchid Society Fall Orchid Festival include: 1. All plants are pest and disease free. 2. The leaves are clean and attractive. 3. Plant is blooming to display its special attributes. 4. Pot is provided with an outer container. 5. Plants must be staked and secured appropriately. Members must pick up their plants promptly at 4:15pm on Saturday, November 11th. We must be out of the Hall early Saturday evening. Nothing can be left at the Church. We urge you to come a little early to help us by assisting with clean up.. Many hands make light work for all! See you there! COS Board of Directors Meeting Angelique Nguyen will be our speaker at the October meeting and she will provide the plants for the raffle. Jerry will contact her and ask if she would bring some extra plants to sell. Old Business: Daniel said that the COS display at the county fair (as a part of the Marina Coast Water Awareness Committee) was well received, and they would like for us to participate again next year. We reviewed the November show project plan as follows: Carol reported that Scott Collins offered to do ribbon judging for the display plants. Since Frances Richardson will not be able to organize the potting demonstrations, Carolyn and John offered to do at least one demonstration. We will also check with a couple other members to see if they would help. September 25, 2017 Meeting called to order at Carolyn s home. Members Present: Carol Easton, Daniel Bellem, Janette Ford, Carolyn Salmon, Jerry Loomis, Lesley Olsen, John O Connell and Susan Holm. Previous Minutes: Minutes from the August 21 meeting were not copied for distribution at this meeting, but have been distributed through email and the Backbulb. Treasurer s Report: Daniel reported that the balance at the beginning of September was $7775.99 and $7690.11 at the end of the month. Treasurer s report was accepted by acclamation. V.P. Report: Jerry reported that Page 5 October 2017

Carol reviewed the contacts she has made so far to advertise the show. Carolyn said she would put notices on Facebook and Craig s list. Jerry said he would contact the Monterey Herald and the Cedar Times. Susan said she would notify the Hacienda Carmel garden club. Carol reported that we have eight vendors planning to be at the show: Orchids and Gardens, Asbell Orchids, Echo Valley Orchids, D & D Orchids, Scarves for a Cause, The Bead & I, Rising International and Jerry Loomis originals. Daniel said he plans to bring a variety of baskets/containers to the October meeting and ask members to fill the container with item(s) for the Silent Auction. Any member who presents receipts of at least $25.00 for the container will receive $5.00 credit for 2018 COS membership. New Business: We talked about purchasing orchids for the December meeting. Carol and Daniel will be visiting Hawaii in late November and offered to visit some nurseries there and purchase and ship plants for the Christmas meeting. COS will participate in the Inspired Home Show at the Fairgrounds on Oct. 15 and 16. We discussed nominations for the 2018 board. John offered to be president, Jerry offered to remain as vice president, Daniel offered to remain as treasurer, Janette offered to remain as secretary, Carol, Carolyn, Susan and Lesley will remain as directors. Carol will contact Lory about remaining as director and Janette will contact Frances about remaining on the board. Jerry will contact a new member who has expressed interest in helping with publicity to see if she would like to be on the board. Carol will present the suggested slate at the October meeting. Janette suggested we supplement our supply of AOS culture sheets to hand out as needed at the Inspired Home Show and our fall show. Daniel will check the current inventory of culture sheets and we will add more as needed. The AOS has revised and expanded the list of plants and topics covered in this handy resource. Our next board meeting will held on October 23 at Susan Holm s house at 7:00. Meeting adjourned at 8:45 Respectfully submitted, Janette Ford Scaphyglottis sp. in John's greenhouse. Tiny flowers!
