Seven New York City lighting design firms earned honors for projects in three different categories: the Lumen Award of Excellence, the Lumen Award of Merit, and a Lumen Citation. Lumen Citation and Merit Award winners are eligible for the International Illumination Design Awards (IIDA) from the IES. The winning projects and their firms are: AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE East River Waterfront Pier 15 and Esplanade, New York City Lighting Designer: Tillotson Design Associates Suzan Tillotson, Erin DeVries, Megan Pfeffer Architect: SHoP Architects Landscape Architect: Workshop: Ken Smith Landscape Architect Client: NYC Economic Development Corporation The lighting for the esplanade provides illumination levels that promote nighttime pedestrian use and convey a sense of safety without distracting from the view of the water. LED light slots within staggered benches guide pedestrians along the main esplanade thoroughfare, while the custom purple vertical girder offers soft and glare-free illumination courtesy of indirect lighting. Indirect lighting also defines the pier s underside, where fluorescent fixtures connect the upper and lower levels of new public space. Lighting Designer: Cooley Monato Studio Renee Cooley, Jenny Ivansson, Adam Kroll Architects: Gabellini Sheppard Associates, DLR Group Rotunda Feature Fabricator: Eventscape Client: Mall of America A sculpture of concentric rings, sloped to echo the curvature of the ceiling, floats above the rotunda of this renovated section of the mall. Shrouded in stainless steel mesh and uplit by LEDs, a four-level elevator core serves as another sculptural element in the public space. Dimmable LEDs encase fabric rings as a perimeter cove encircles the piece, while cove lights inspired by Bauhaus artist Josef Albers frame ceiling paintings. Tiered translucent acrylic panels on the underside of pedestrian bridges are backlit. Pei Architect, io Architects, Masatoyo Ogasawara Architects Client: Miho Institute of Aesthetics I.M. Pei found his inspiration for the teardrop-shaped building by folding a simple square of paper into a cone and the drape of an oriental gown. The lighting system responds to this form with only three lighting elements: a circular chandelier overhead, structured like a bicycle wheel with a steel tube core and three spokes; a cove where the walls meets the floor; and a stanchion supporting a line of AR111 gimbals lighting the altar. LED miniature step lights, which are regressed into the sidewalls, climb the limestone staircase.

Smaller galleries without daylight house sensitive works on paper. A perforated ceiling brings uniformity to the daylit areas. Photo by Jeffrey Bittermann Logan, New York City Lighting Designer: Lighting Workshop Steven Espinoza Architect: SO-IL Client: Logan Two symmetrical rectilinear spaces each feature a long work table that can accommodate work groups of any size. Glass walls divide the end section of the continuous tables, creating private spaces. A deep backlit ceiling cavity maximizes lamp spacing within. Floor-to-ceiling translucent fabric walls separate the central work areas, inviting in natural light.

Fisher Building - Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), Brooklyn, New York Lighting Designer: Cline Bettridge Bernstein Lighting Design Francesca Bettridge, Michael Hennes, Nathalie Faubert, Jiyoung Lee Architect: H3 Hardy Collaborative Architecture Client: Brooklyn Academy of Music The lighting features of this performing arts center needed to work within the building s landmark status. As such, concealed LED strips in the coffered ceilings illuminate the lobby, complemented by frosted glass risers with color-changing LED strips on the staircase. Photo by Francis Dzikowski Torre Iberdrola, Bilbao, Spain Lighting Designer: Cline Bettridge Bernstein Francesca Bettridge, Michael Hennes, Nathalie Faubert Architect: Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects Client: Iberdola The generally overcast weather of the city presented a challenge to designers wanting to create a light, airy ambiance for the public spaces. Compact fluorescent lights recessed in the ceiling illuminate the lobby, while LEDs light ribbons of glass in the floor from below. Photo by Jeff Goldberg CITATION AWARDS Park Hyatt, Washington, D.C. Client: Hyatt Group A clean lighting scheme provides airiness to a subterranean space, overcoming challenges of limited ceiling heights, shallow plenum space, and cove depths. Custom pendants shimmer under the angled ceiling, and textured channel glass at the stair banister glows with linear LEDs. Backlit channel glass also appears behind the banquette, accentuates the horizontal lines of the upholstered wall. Track-mounted wallwashers placed around the screen s perimeter recreate the natural lighting effect on cloudy days and at night. Accent lights mounted in the ceiling reflect off the surface.
