Residents are very receptive to the new blue box additions and the amount of plastics captured has increased by 20%. Keep up the excellent work! Participation: A Backyard Composter: $15.00 - UNBELIEVABLE! Very Good! Despite all the changes that have occurred to the recycling program participation remains good. The streets are lined with red and blue boxes in most municipalities on recycling day. Your efforts should be congratulated. Capture: B Rain Barrel: $35.00 - WOW Currently we are getting 70% of the recyclables from households - which is good, but could be even better if the same effort was applied in the bathroom, bedroom, and basement as was applied in the kitchen. We are still not getting all your packaging materials such as the toilet paper rolls, shampoo bottles, aerosol cans, and laundry detergent bottles. Proper Use: B - This refers to putting the right materials in the proper box. We re doing a satisfactory job, but we can all try harder to use the Red Box only for paper products and the bigger Blue Box only for containers. It may not look like it but the paper and containers are placed in separate compartments on the same truck. These materials are then delivered to two separate recycling facilities. Paper goes to the Fibre Recycling Building and containers go to the Container Recycling Building. If you have too much of one type of material try using another similar size container for your overflow like a laundry basket or cardboard box. You can also purchase additional boxes at any Home Hardware store for $6.00 ea. plus tax. that we can currently recycle. EWSWA has established Public Drop Off depots for other materials such as electronics, scrap metal, tires, and household hazardous wastes because we cannot collect these materials in our curbside recycling program. If you put these materials in your Red or Blue Box they simply take the long road to the landfill or worse still, they end up contaminating the other recyclable materials, and threaten the marketability of these materials. n a C! e We r o M THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY... The Good! This is an actual example of a resident doing everything right! All the materials are recyclable, there is no contamination and all the products are separated into the correct box. The Blue Box is full of containers and the Red Box is full of paper. The Bad! And, The Ugly! Containers are in plastic bags, loose on the lawn, and the bags are roped together. This looks more like garbage day than recycling day. Separation: Paper products must go in the Red Box. Containers must go in the Blue Box. No mixing materials. This is what happens when things start to go wrong. All the products are recyclable, BUT, they are packaged incorrectly. The recycle truck drivers love these boxes, and we thank you for doing such a great job! Corrective Measures: Don t use plastic bags, and get a Blue Box, laundry basket or even a cardboard box. And, no rope - ever. Question Corner Unfortunately, nothing is right about this photo. All of the visible items are not recyclable in our program, and everything is packaged incorrectly. Contamination: You cannot recycle plastic toys, shovels, pool noodles, chairs, umbrellas, rope, pots, pans, in your recycle boxes. You asked...we answered. Q. Clementines (tangerines) often come packaged in wooden crates - are the wooden crates recyclable? A. At certain times of the year, we are inundated with wooden orange crates at the Recycling Centre. - but, here s the deal...we can t recycle them. Wooden Crates - NO, not recyclable. Q. Gable-top containers look and feel like paper. What box do they go in? A. Despite how they look or feel, gable -top containers (milk, creamer, juices, etc.) belong in the Blue Box. NO! ENVIROTIP: Gable top containers go in LOOSE in the Blue Box. Nesting items inside each other causes many problems at our facility. web: www.ewswa.org page 2

EWSWA Approved Merchandise Available Your local Home Hardware Store is carrying the EWSWA approved recycling products - which means that we endorse the product and have found it to be well made, and compatible with our curbside recycling program. PUBLIC NOTICE Recycling Carts Residential Recycling Cart* - 35 gal. - $65 plus tax. (with approved lifting mechanism) Large Recycling Boxes - $6 plus tax. Mini Recycling Boxes - $3 plus tax. Backyard Composters - $35 plus tax. *Note: Not all recycling carts are equipped with the same lifting mechanism. This means that there are many types that are NOT compatible with the recycling trucks in Essex/Windsor. The residential recycling carts at Home Hardware have the approved lifting mechanism, and will be accepted in our recycling program. HOSTING A SPECIAL EVENT? - NEED RECYCLING? Special Events Recycling If you attend one of the many special events and festivals scheduled this summer, please look for the recycling carts. Containers (water bottles, plastic cups, liquor bottles, cans, etc.) belong in the container cart, and paper products should be placed in the cart designated for paper. CAUTION: Not all roll-out carts are compatible with our collection vehicles. ONLY carts with the proper lifting mechanism can be collected. Carts must have upper attachment and lower bar configuration. No manual lifting of bags out of carts. If you are hosting a large special event and require recycling services, please contact the EWSWA in order to organize a recycling program for your event. This is a year round, FREE service. Register early, first come, first served. You can call 1-800-265-9625 for more information or to register for special event recycling services. Capacity limit 340 L (90 gallon) or 170 L (35 gallon) approved roll out cart. Non-compatible carts will NOT be picked up by our collection trucks. FOOD RESCUE PROGRAM Plentiful Harvest! The Food Rescue Program consists of three key strategies and resources which allow Plentiful Harvest to establish a comprehensive program to rescue large quantities of food (fresh/prepared) to package, distribute, feed, educate, and make more accessible food resources to individuals/families in need and enhance food security. Plentiful Harvest is the only program of its kind in Ontario that offers all of the strategies together under one umbrella making them very unique. Both fresh and prepared food is received through business donations. It is then distributed to those in need. Note: All rescued food stays in Windsor and Essex County.
