Evaluation Overview A PRE screener conducted a literature review for this plant (Euonymus alatus 'Compactus') in an effort to understand the invasive history, reproductive strategies, and the impact, if any, on the region's native plants and animals. This research reflects the data available at the time this evaluation was conducted. Summary Euonymus alatus is invasive in Illinois and across the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, and New England. The species and all cultivars, including 'Compactus', are prohibited in Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. 'Compactus' produces copious viable seed, which germinates readily in the second growing season after dispersal. Birds consume the fruit and move the seeds long distances. Dense thickets are documented in natural areas with significant negative impacts on native plant communities. This evaluation confirms that 'Compactus' burning bush is not a safe choice for Illinois landscapes. The only case to be made in its favor is that it remains a very popular plant and is a top 5 seller in terms of shrub sales in our area. Homeowners and commercial landscapers both like using it for its desirable ornamental characteristics. Contractors should be educated in where to use this plant.
