NEXT MEETING: SEPTEMBER 15TH, 2008 Time: 7:30 pm Plant sales begin at 7:00 Where: Jim Ward Community Center 301 NW 46th Ave (Park East Drive) Plantation, Fl 33317 The Member Sales Table will be open Guest Speaker: Dr. Jeffery Block Topic: Our Space A DAY IN THE LIFE OF THE BLOCK FAMILY GARDEN About our Guest Speaker As a recently retired MD Anesthesiologist, Dr. Jeff Block now has more time to better share his gardening interests. Recognized as both a scientist and artist, his creative use of garden space and sound horticultural practices define his personal residence in South Miami. This garden enjoys a reputation as one of our country s more important private landscapes, has been twice featured in the Miami Herald s Tropical Life section. Over the past decade, he has served as a Fellow at Fairchild Tropical Garden, lectured on tropical horticulture, and is presently involved with the Miami-Dade County Agricultural Extension Office s Master Gardener program. Dr. Block s talents had their roots dating back to when he came to Miami as a teenager in 1970, but didn t truly blossom into that of a horticulturalist until he joined the Bromeliad Society of South Florida in the early 1980 s. He served as a two-term President of the society during 1989 and 1990, and by competing in plant show competitions, he developed a keen eye for horticultural excellence. From bromeliads, he branched out into most familiar plant families, including orchids, palms, aroids, ferns, begonias and succulents. His garden and greenhouses are filled with these, and other true oddball curiosities of the plant world. To consolidate his experiences, Dr. Block is now preparing to co-author a book about the secrets of tropical gardening details to follow! An avid photographer, Monday s presentation was prepared by Dr. Block with pictures taken this past Labor Day during the most active growing season of the year. He is a proud father to three boys, and lives with his wife Michelle, a registered nurse. The President s Message Hey Everyone, It s been too long since we have seen each other! Last month due to TS Hanna - and looks like we were lucky enough to skate by H. Ike. What the board decided to do since we were not able to have our summer party potluck, we will have it in November to kick off the holiday season, I can t believe it s here already?! To start off the fall season, I am extremely excited to have Dr. Jeffery Block give us a program. The ones who went on the field trip earlier this year to his home were in amazement at his garden. He has a brom named after him. I will have a pic and description on page 6. This power point program well be filled with info, so don t miss it!!! Invite your friends!!! Next, it s time to start thinking about October s Annual Auction. We did not have it last year due to the extravaganza, but for you newer members, this is an annual event that the society has not only to raise funds for the club, but to add to our collections. It is also the time to get incredible plants at a great price. We ask that each member bring 3 to 5 plants or a bromeliad related item to be auctioned off; something that you would want to receive as a gift. The plants must be free of scale, not burnt, and potted (if bare root it must be clean of dirt and in a bag. A bromeliad related item can be art, photo, fertilizer, books, decorative container, gift cert. for a landscaping job. We always have a great time and a bidding frenzy usually erupts! Preview of the plants will be at 6:30 and we ll begin the auction PROMPTLY at 7:00. Also, October is the last month to buy a brom ( if you need one to start grooming and enter in the show in April of 09) The board wants as many participants as possible, if you have ANY questions about what and how to enter or if you have a special idea about something you want to enter PLEASE ASK!!!! We are more than happy to help you get started. See you Monday, Colleen
