Department: Chemical Engineering Applied Chemistry Proposed By: Graeme Norval Phone number: (46)-946-7507 Email: Graeme.norval@utoronto.ca Date of Application: December 0, 03 Proposed location/course: Equipment/Project: Description: Please make specific reference to course syllabus. Unit Total Price Attach quotation(s) WB5/WB5; CHE3S, CHE34F, CHE3S Hot Oil System The chemical engineering laboratory is limited in what can be done, by the low steam pressure (UofT generates steam for building heat, not for processing). For the department to move to industrial type operating conditions, we need to be able to run at higher temperatures. These give higher reaction rates, as well as more realistic disturbances in the process control units $3,00 CDN; other details attached Please include applicable taxes, freight & delivery, etc. Justification for request: What is currently in use what is it lacking? If the project is not replacing anything then why is this needed? How will this benefit the course students? How many students will this affect in total? What is the expected lifespan of the equipment? The hot oil system will last 0 0 years. It will allow for substantial changes in the experiments that we run. Currently, the process control experiments take cold water make warm water with this as the heating source we can make steam the control response is fundamentally different. We can run the glass reactors at higher temperatures, make products faster. In the heat transfer experiments we can demonstrate the impact of temperature on fluid viscosity hence rates of heat transfer. It will help all students, in their third year of the program either in the fall term labs or the winter term labs. Other comments: More details attached
