General architectural description: This single-story commercial building is located at the eastern corner of Lincoln Avenue and 8th Street in downtown Steamboat Springs. Measuring 25' NW-SE (across) by 140' NE-SW (deep), the building is currently occupied by two retail tenants: "Straightline Outdoor Sports" and "Embellishments." The symmetrical façade fronts directly onto the wide concrete sidewalk paralleling Lincoln Avenue on the southwest elevation. Here, a stained natural brown glass-in-wood-frame door, with a transom light, enters Straightline Outdoor Sports from within a centered, recessed, entryway. The entry is flanked on either side by large single-light fixed-pane storefront display windows with silver metal frames. The kick plate areas beneath the windows are clad with a river rock in concrete veneer, while slightly projecting red brick columns appear at either end of the façade. The upper façade wall is composed of a blond bricks laid in running bond, with red brick accents. A stringcourse, composed of two courses of projecting red brick stretchers, appears near the top of the wall surface; and, the topmost course of bricks is composed of alternating red and blond brick headers which create the impression of a dentil course. The façade's upper and lower portions are divided by an applied vertical wood plank band, hidden behind a green canvas awning which extends along nearly the full width of the façade. The words "Straightline Outdoor Sports" appears on the canvas in yellow lettering. The building's long northwest elevation faces 8th Street. The wall on this elevation is made of red brick laid in running bond, divided by eight slightly projecting red brick columns. The alternating red and blond brick header course at the top of the façade wall continues along the top of the northwest elevation. Two entry doors enter the building on the northwest elevation. One is a stained natural brown wood-paneled door, set within a distinctive rounded stone arch, and beneath a green canvas awning. This is a side entry door into Straightline Outdoor Sports. The other entry on the northwest elevation is also a stained natural brown wood-paneled door, set within a distinctive rounded stone

Page 3 of 8 arch. This door is covered by a red canvas awning and is the entry into Embellishments. Four canted, hiproofed, oriel type, display windows also penetrate the northwest elevation. The northeast (rear) elevation and the southeast (side) elevation feature painted brown concrete pargeting, probably over concrete block construction. A steel grey service entry door is located on the rear elevation. 22. Architectural style: Twentieth Century Commercial Style Building type: 23. Landscape or special setting features: This single-story commercial building is located at the eastern corner of Lincoln Avenue and 8th Street in the heart of downtown Steamboat Springs. The Shack Café, at 740 Lincoln Avenue, abuts this building on its southeast elevation. The Routt County National Bank Building is located across 8th Street to the northwest. 24. February 1996. 29. Construction history: Sanborn Insurance maps for Steamboat Springs, and historic photos, reveal that this property was initially developed prior to 1911. The 1911 and 1920 Sanborn maps both depict a rectangular-shaped building at this location, with its use labeled drugs. Historic photos show the drug store building was a single-story, wood frame, front-gabled, building, with a false front. The drug store building was gone by 1939, and in that year, a new larger commercial building was erected at this location, as Steamboat Spring's new Safeway store. Routt County Assessor records indicate that the building was "remodeled for restaurant and tavern in 1976," and that the "exterior [was] remodeled [in] 1983." 30. Historical background: The west half of Lot 7 in Block 16, where this building is located, was originally developed prior to 1911 with the construction of a false-front commercial building. Originally a drug store, the building was known variously as Mitchell's Drug Store, the Corner Drug Store, and possibly as Green's Drug Store, this business probably existed here until sometime in the 1930s. Oral sources indicate that this lot was vacant by the late 1930s. A new commercial building was then erected here in 1939, as Steamboat Spring's new Safeway grocery store. For a time previously, Safeway had been located in a smaller building at 828 Lincoln Avenue, which later became the Allen's Clothing Building (5RT.247). Safeway was located in this building until the late 1950s or early 1960s, when it moved to the 1100 block of Lincoln Avenue. Safeway moved once again, circa 1970, to the east end of Lincoln Avenue. In the meantime, this building became the Ben Franklin store for a time. The building was then remodeled, circa 1976, to become the Shortbranch Saloon. Straightline Outdoor Sports, the building's current (2007) retail business, has been located here since the mid-to-late 1980s. 36. Sources of information: Alexandroff, Marty. Statement of significance: Built as a Safeway store in 1939, this building was historically significant for its associations with Steamboat Springs' commercial development through the World War II period, and the middle years of the twentieth century. It may also have been architecturally notable for its Depression-era downtown commercial style architectural characteristics. The building's level of significance in these regards was probably not to the extent that it would have qualified for individual listing in the National Register of Historic Places or in the State Register of Historic Properties. Moreover, due to a loss of integrity, at the present time, the building is also probably ineligible for individual local landmark designation. 43. Assessment of historic physical integrity related to significance: This building displays a marginal standard of physical integrity, relative to the seven aspects of integrity as defined by the National Park Service and the Colorado Historical Society, Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation - setting, location, design, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. Substantial alterations to the building's southwest and northwest elevations (facing Lincoln Avenue and 8th Street), have diminished the sense of time and place related to the late Depression-era downtown grocery which once existed here.
