UNIVERSITY OF THE THIRD AGE GARDEN/VISITS Group Meeting held on 13 th May 2015 Sandra welcomed everyone including one new member, Roberta. 42 people attended. Barbara told us that The Square Phase 2 consultation would take place on Saturday May 16 th at The White Lion, 10:30am and on Saturday 30 th in the Square, Beeston, 10:30-2:00. The visit to Harlow Carr was a fabulous day, a real treat with hot sunny weather. Some members had been to see the bluebells at different venues. Mentioned were: Attenborough had pockets of them, Wollaton, and Bluebell Hill at Bramcote. No members made it to the May Fest at the university this year. Sandra had hoped to visit the open gardens at Moor Lane but hadn t got there so would bear in mind for next year to arrange a visit. They are open again on June 14 th between 1 pm and 5pm but it clashes with the Norfolk visit. Norfolk Visit: Glenis queried u3a insurance cover for holiday. Sandra said it was the responsibility of individuals to get their own. Lace Road, Beeston is the departure point. Forms needed to be filled out if not already done. Money/cheques for trips to be put in envelope and will be collected by Sandra on the bus. Take bus passes. Comfort stop on route. Evenings free. Leaving 10am for Gooderstone Water Gardens and Oxburgh, arriving back about 7pm. Sandra had stayed at the hotel and reported that rooms were nice, clean bathrooms. There is a bowling alley and cinema next to hotel, a few minutes walk to the riverside gardens, Morrison s store nearby, uphill walk to town, taxis reasonable, buses are available. Three course menu in the evening with 3 choices for each course. Steep steps at the Plantation Garden. Café at the RC cathedral serves light lunches and in lovely spot. Lynn thanked Sandra for her efforts in organising the trip and research. Gardeners World Magazine has half price tickets in this month s issue. Sainsbury s copy includes gardening gloves and 5 packets of seeds. 5.99. A tree had to be felled on Bramcote Lane after the storms and the owner is left with a stump. Sandra asked for suggestions of what could be done with it for the owner. Suggestions included removing it with a grubbing machine, a stumpery, grow fungus or ferns, build an insect house on the top. Sandra displayed the books from our library collection.

Sandra has a DVD about Powys Castle for September. Ann recommended Ashford in the Water, Derbyshire for a visit. Open Thursdays, 5 entry. Sandra asked if any members would like to open their garden for a visit. Sheila volunteered. Date to be arranged.
