Koi Ahoy Volume 26 Number 9 September, 2015 Jean Jahr, President Bob Haugland, Editor Koi Auction & Ice Cream Social Our hosts, Dwane & Melody Carlson, treated us to three flavors of homemade ice cream. The potluck buffet table had any of the fixin s your little heart might desire, and there were even a few lunch items. Pie is considered lunch, right? Pauline Sakai, Photos Above Vanilla, chocolate, and peach homemade ice cream. Top/right The gentile waterfall that seems to come right out of the garden. Right Carol & Doug Porter discuss how much of that pie they re going to get.

Koi Ahoy, September, 2015 page 2 The Auction Nobody knows how many fish were offered for auction. We don t even know how many bags there were. We do know that a lot of fish changed hands and lots of happy, healthy koi went home with lots of new owners. The photo at the right is just one of the two holding tanks that we floated the bags in. It took a couple of hours to auction off all of the bags. Of the dozens of bags, almost every one was bid on. Although there were a few stinkers. It s not that they were ugly or undesirable fish, there were just so many to chose from and there s only so much water in the pond. I think five bags went home with their original owners. The Action At left is our auctioneer, Georgia, frantically waving her bidding paddle in order to win the bid for what we might call the Fish of the Day. Sandy Mascadri, (bottom right) brought a beautiful Goshiki that sold for the highest bid of the day, $75.

Koi Ahoy, September, 2015 page 3 The Carlson Pond A Little About Granite Bay Koi Did you know that Duane Carlson can get you many of your pond supplies at very reasonable prices? Here s his response to my email about what sort of stuff he sells. Hi Bob, Yes, I have potassium permanganate, Ultra Balance food (both wheat and all season) and some Hikari, Medi-Koi medicated food, Matala filter material, declor, clay, water test kits, Medzyme, Minn Finn, pumps, UV lamps and can get most anything else as long as I can save people money. Contact Dwane at dc.huatulco@yahoo.com or call him at 916 791-7607 at right, Melody & Dwane

Koi Ahoy, September, 2015 page 4 September Meeting, Sam & Kami Niebank, Roseville Sam has been planning to build/add on to a new and bigger pond for a while now. He s getting ready to dig the hole and he has all of his ducks lined up in a nice, neat row. He ll share with us all of the plans for filtering, electrical, waterfall, everything. The average koi hobbyist builds three ponds so admit it: you re thinking about adding onto or building another pond yourself, aren t you? Here s our chance to learn about it. The meeting specs are still the same: It s Sunday, Sept. 27. The board meets at noon and all are invited to attend. The general meeting convenes at 1pm when we decide whether we ll eat first or talk first. The address is 4018 Wakehurst Ct., Roseville, 95747 and here s your google link: https://www.google.com/maps/place/4018+wakehurst+ct,+roseville,+ca+95747/@38.744143,- 121.356314,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x809b26d4834b1e5d:0xb1286f6168887e52 Here s Sam s current pond. Estimated to be 600-800ish gallons. The grassy area at the top- left is the site for the addition of 3,000-5,000 gallons.

Koi Ahoy, September, 2015 page 5 Koi Rescue, September 18, 2015 Here it is folks. Sam in his element. His latest rescue was (fairly) close to my house so I volunteered to help with the task. The pond was only 36 at the deepest part, but it was 20 wide and 15 across. A few plants and lots of rocks made chasing the Tosai around a bit challenging. How hard can it be? Just get the little 8 koi into the 22 net, (left). Piece o cake, right? Except that the deck Sam is standing on is actually a 12 over hang, lined with rocks. The two of us would think we got one trapped and, Fhoom! The little bugger would just disappear and show up 20 seconds later on the other side of the pond. Success! There s an 8 Tosai in the bottom of this net. and into the ice chest he goes.

Koi Ahoy, September, 2015 page 6 The Fruits of our Labor Two ice chests full of assorted Tosai. At left is a small ice chest with some of the smaller koi and one young hi fin banded shark. At right, larger koi in a larger ice chest, and a second hi fin banded shark. Not in the photo is a nice shubunkin goldfish that took us quite a while to catch.
