Dynamic Strength The ram (weight 100lbs) is to be used to deliver five impacts at rated dynamic strength to be conducted with the force or impact applied a specific point.

2012 IBC 1008.1.9.7 Delayed egress locks. Abridged Version Approved, listed, delayed egress - any occupancy except Group A, E and H occupancies in buildings that are equipped throughout with an automatic sprinkler system or an approved automatic smoke or heat detection system installed in accordance with Section 907, provided that the doors unlock in accordance with Items 1 through 6 below. A building occupant shall not be required to pass through more than one door before exit. 1. Unlock upon actuation of sprinkler or fire detection system. 2. Unlock upon loss of power controlling the lock or lock mechanism. 3. Unlocked by a signal from the fire command center. 4. Initiation of an irreversible process which will release the latch in not more than 15 seconds when a force of not more than 15 pounds (67 N) is applied for 1 second Activates audible signal in the vicinity of the door. Relocking shall be by manual means only. Exception: Where approved, a delay of not more than 30 seconds is permitted. 5. A sign shall be provided on the door located above and within 12 inches (305 mm) of the release device reading: PUSH UNTIL ALARM SOUNDS. DOOR CAN BE OPENED IN 15 [30] SECONDS. 6. 2012 IBC 1008.1.9.6 Special locking arrangements in Group I-2. Approved special egress locks shall be permitted in a Group I-2 occupancy where the clinical needs of persons receiving care require such locking. Special egress locks shall be permitted in such occupancies where the building is equipped throughout with an automatic sprinkler system in accordance with Section 903.3.1.1 or an approved automatic smoke or heat detection system installed in accordance with Section 907, provided that the doors are installed and operate in accordance with Items 1 through 7. 1. The doors unlock upon actuation of the automatic sprinkler system or automatic fire detection system. 2. The doors unlock upon loss of power controlling the lock or lock mechanism. 3. The door locks shall have the capability of being unlocked by a signal from the fire command center, a nursing station or other approved location. 4. A building occupant shall not be required to pass through more than one door equipped with a special egress lock before entering an exit. 5. The procedures for the operation(s) of the unlocking system shall be described and approved as part of the emergency planning and preparedness required by Chapter 4 of the International Fire Code. 6. All clinical staff shall have the keys, codes or other means necessary to operate the locking devices. 7. Emergency lighting shall be provided at the door. Exception: Items 1 through 4 shall not apply to doors to areas where persons, which because of clinical needs, require restraint or containment as part of the function of a psychiatric treatment area. 34

Elevator Lobbies IBC 2012 713.14.1 Elevator lobby. An enclosed elevator lobby shall be provided at each floor where an elevator shaft enclosure connects more than three stories. Elevator lobbies shall have at least one means of egress complying with Chapter 10 and other provisions within this code. Chapter 10 -International Building Code (IBC) requires elevator lobbies to have at least one means of egress complying with Chapter 10. No stairway directly accessible elevator lobby! Security to the tenant space and providing delayed egress hardware which would allow egress into and through the tenant space from the elevator lobby after a 15-second delay. 38

STAIRWELL - 2015 403.12 Stairway door operation. Stairway doors other than the exit discharge doors shall be permitted to be locked from stairway side. Stairway doors that are locked from the stairway side shall be capable of being unlocked simultaneously without unlatching upon a signal from the fire command center. 41
Stairwell Doors IBC 2012 & 2015 1008.1.9.11 Stairway doors. Interior stairway means of egress doors shall be openable from both sides without the use of a key or special knowledge or effort. Exceptions: 1. Stairway discharge doors shall be openable from the egress side and shall only be locked from the opposite side. 2. This section shall not apply to doors arranged in accordance with Section 403.5.3. 3. In stairways serving not more than four stories, doors are permitted to be locked from the side opposite the egress side, provided they are openable from the egress side and capable of being unlocked simultaneously without unlatching upon a signal from the fire command center, if present, or a signal by emergency personnel from a single location inside the main entrance to the building. 42

Battery Backup? NFPA 72-2010 Codes require mag-locks to unlock upon loss of power, but loss of power is not defined. Is this loss of normal building power? Can the lock be powered by the emergency generator along with the rest of the building? NFPA 72 Interpretation - if the fire alarm system and mag-locks are on the same back-up power, this would meet the intent of the code.
NFPA 72 2010 Clarification Battery back-up on electrically-locked doors: abridged versions 21.9.3 Batteries as a secondary power supply - the batteries shall not be utilized to maintain these doors in the locked condition, unless the fire alarm control unit is arranged to ensure the exits will unlock within 10 minutes of loss of primary power. 21.9.4 Locks powered by independent power supplies dedicated to lock power and access control functions, and that unlock upon loss of power, shall not be required to comply with 21.9.3. 21.9.5 If means of egress doors are unlocked by the fire alarm system, the unlocking function shall occur prior to, or concurrent with, activation of any public-mode notification appliances in the area(s) served by the normally locked means of egress doors. 21.9.6 All doors that are required to be unlocked by the fire alarm system in accordance with 21.9.1 shall remain unlocked until the fire alarm condition is manually reset. 74
