Senior Staff held their weekly meeting on Tuesday, July 3 rd, at Headquarters Station 31. Emergency Management Coordinator Yancey worked in the Emergency Operations Center at the Special Olympics HQ at the University of Washington on Tuesday, July 3 rd, Thursday, July 5 th & Friday, July 6 th. The EOC was activated to cover all venues, including Federal Way. Extra units and personnel were on hand in our communities in support of a safe Independence Day celebration on Wednesday, July 4 th. Administrator Robertson & duty crew attended the City of Auburn Independence Day celebration and parade at Les Gove Park on Wednesday, July 4 th. This Week: DC Olson will attend the City of Auburn Blue Ribbon Committee meeting on Tuesday, July 10 th at Auburn City Hall. Fire Marshal Stewart will attend the Zone 3 Fire Marshals meeting on Tuesday, July 10 th in Kent. Senior Staff will hold their weekly meeting on Tuesday, July 10 th, at Headquarters Station 31. The Civil Service Commission meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 10 th Auburn City Hall. at The monthly Finance Committee and Board of Governance meetings will be held on Tuesday, July 10 th at Headquarters Station 31. DC Olson & Captain Kuzaro will attend the King County Medic One BLS subcommittee meeting on Thursday, July 12 th in Renton. VRFA crews will attend the City of Auburn Community Picnic on Thursday, July 12 th at Lea Hill Park. The annual audit by the Washington Cities Insurance Authority will be held on Friday, July 13 th at Headquarters Station 31. VRFA staff will attend the Pacific Days festivities being held on Friday, July 13 th and Saturday, July 14 th in Pacific. 911 Requests for Services / Customer Service: Aid Call: (Pacific) On Monday, July 2 nd at 12:20 p.m., firefighters with King County Medics responded to an adult male complaining of a headache. The patient was evaluated on scene and transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center (MAMC) by private ambulance. Illegal Burning: (Lakeland Hills) On Tuesday, July 3 rd at 2:18 p.m., firefighters responded to a land owner burning brush. The land owner was educated on the rule for burning in the City of Auburn. The fire was extinguished by the land owner. Brush Fire: (Black Diamond) On Wednesday, July 4 th at 11:34 a.m., firefighters responded with Mountain View Fire for a reported brush fire. The fire was initially reported 100 by 100 size. Firefighters aggressively attacked the fire, built containment line, and extinguished the brush fire. The fire was contained to 1.43 acres in size with no injuries to civilians or firefighters. Aid Call: (Super Mall) On Thursday, July 5 th at 3:30 p.m., firefighters with King County Medics responded to an adult female with shortness of breath. 2
The patient was evaluated on scene and transported to MAMC by private ambulance. Aid Call: (Lea Hill) On Friday, July 6 th at 2:15 p.m., firefighters assisted a middle age female having multiple seizures. The patient was evaluated and transported to Valley Medical Center by King County Medics. Motor Vehicle Accident: (Auburn) On Saturday, July 7 th at 6:51 a.m., firefighters responded to a motor vehicle accident in front of Station 32 on R Street. The crew found a T-bone accident that had one middle age male patient. The patient was evaluated by King County Medics and transported to MAMC by VRFA aid car. Hedge Fire: (Auburn) On Sunday, July 8 th at 4:37 p.m., firefighters responded to a hedge on fire. Firefighters arrived to find a large hedge and fence near a house on fire. They pulled a hand line to extinguish it and protect exposures. There was no extension to the nearby house. The cause is undetermined. Training Division Activities: Year 2017 2018 Weekly 309 389 Year to Date 13,978* 15,993 *Note: these 2017 hours include 4,800 hours completed by our 6 new firefighters in recruit academy 3 rd Quarter Training: Since there was expected higher than normal call volume and due to the holiday week, no additional training drills were scheduled. Firefighters were able to use this time to catch up on assigned quarterly training objectives. Fire Marshal s Office Business Fire & Life Safety Inspections: Certified Fire Inspectors completed 2 business safety inspections this week. o Knutson Memory Facility, 3430 Academy Drive SE Reviews: Land Use Reviews completed this week: 9 Plan Reviews completed this week: 4 Fire Investigations: There were about 30 response fires this last week all over VRFA response area. Most notable are as follows: o In the 3700 block of I St NE, an adult male sustained heavy injuries to his hand and face when improperly discharging a mortar. The victim was stabilized by VRFA personnel and was transported to a nearby hospital. o An adult male was treated and released by VRFA personnel in the 2100 block of Auburn Way South. The victim was watching a group set off mortars. The mortars fell over in a grouping and the man was struck in the chest. He sustained a contusion and 1 st degree burns. o In the 2600 block of Auburn Way South, a fireworks stand ignited when nearby combustibles (cardboard) were lit by suspected fireworks. The stand was mostly empty of ordinary combustibles and completely empty of fireworks. o On Thursday, July 5 th an accidental fire occurred in the 200 block of Valley View Drive. The fire was determined to have been the result of recklessly discharged fireworks. The fire was contained prior to extension into the main structure. Public Education PIEO staff assisted an expectant mother with the installation of an infant car seat. Recruitment, planning and coordination continued for upcoming summer events and parades. Posts were made to social media pages regarding fireworks safety, call volume, child passenger safety and Meritorious Unit Citations given to firefighters who displayed outstanding work freeing victims from a serious motor vehicle crash. 4
Planning and Logistics P&L received 4 apparatus and 5 facility/small tool maintenance requests. Monthly EMS inventory was conducted at all stations. PPE is being collected for annual cleaning by Northwest Safety Clean. R&D is being conducted for future hose and extrication tool purchase. P&L is working on the 2019 budget. 5
