12 th International Conference Informatics for Water Systems and Smart Cities University of Perugia, Italy 2-4 September 2013 First announcement Organised by: Co-organised by: Centre for Water Systems

For the first time the CCWI series of biennial conferences initiated by the universities of Brunel, De Montfort, Exeter, Sheffield and Imperial College will be held outside the United Kingdom. It will take place in Perugia, Italy. The University of Perugia and the Technical University of Bari are proud to be hosting this conference as well as the next Water Distribution Systems Analysis conference (WDSA2014). The conference will highlight the use of hydroinformatics in water system planning and management to provide solutions and new paradigms to challenging problems, which in a urban perspective gives rise to the concept of smart cities. The conference will provide the opportunity for close collaboration between established and young scientists, software developers, practitioners, and stakeholders from public and private organizations. So we encourage you to contribute to the development of future solutions and widen your own expertise and profile by attending and actively taking part to the conference.

AIMS The aims of this conference series are: To facilitate the continued co-operation of academic institutions and industry; To examine the current state-of-the-art in computing and control techniques applicable to the water industry; To provide a forum for discussions and the dissemination of ideas on applied computing and control for the water industry, with particular emphasis on: Providers perspectives - recent developments in research; Users perspectives - users experience of the latest techniques; Future needs - current and future planning and operational requirements. Short courses, group meetings and exhibitions, will also take place during the conference.

The main focus of the conference is on water supply/ distribution and urban drainage/sewerage systems. TOPICS Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: Water engineering solutions for smart, liveable and sustainable cities; Systems modeling, optimization and decision support; Asset management and performance modeling; Demand forecasting, leakage and energy management; Real time monitoring, modeling, prediction control and data management issues; Impacts of climate change on urban water management; Sustainable urban water management including flooding issues; Water and wastewater treatment modeling, optimization and control; Water quality modeling; Advances in sensors, instrumentation and communications technologies; Data management including SCADA and GIS; Security, reliability and resilience; Case studies and practical applications. Other topics, e.g. groundwater or costal area management, which relate to those listed above may also be included. Anyone interested in organising a special session on a topic of interest to a wider audience is encouraged to contact the organisers soon.

LOCATION The conference will be held at the Faculty of Engineering campus of the University of Perugia. OFFICIAL LANGUAGE The official language of the conference is English. All presentations will be made in English and no simultaneous translation will be provided. TIMETABLE Submission of abstracts: 1 February 2013 Notification of acceptance or rejection: 1 April 2013 Deadline for full paper submission: 1 June 2013 Deadline for registration (early): 1 July 2013 REGISTRATION AND FEES Registration is required and fees will be available online at www.water-system.org/ccwi2013. Reduced fees will be applied to the attendees of both CCWI2013 and WDSA2014 conferences. Details will be provided in the second announcement. PROGRAMME To be announced. CALL FOR PAPERS Details will be provided in the second announcement and on the web site. TRAVEL AND ACCOMMODATION Perugia is located in central Italy and is served by rail, air and motorway connections. Further travel information will be given in the second annoncement. A list of recommended hotels will be provided to participants.

Umbria: Perugia is the most important city in Umbria, the ancient land of the Etruscans. The name Umbria conjures up an idea of peace and tranquillity, of green countryside, mountains, woods and rivers immortalized in Renaissance paintings by Perugino, the artist who taught Raffaello Sanzio. In Umbria life fits easily into the natural environment. St. Benedict of Norcia and St. Francis of Assisi, founders of western monasticism, came from the area. VENUE Its austere medieval walled cities - Assisi, Montefalco, Gubbio, Città di Castello, Orvieto, Todi, and Spoleto - easy to reach from Perugia, are rich in cultural treasures, mouth-watering local cusine (with its olive oils and fabulous wines, terrific barbecues and country fairs). Historically water has been important in the region because of the river Tiber, strongly linked to Roman civilization, Trasimeno lake, where Hannibal defeated the Romans in the Second Punic War (217 BC), and the Marmore waterfalls, develped through the hydraulic expertise of the Roman consul Curius Dentatus (271 BC). Cities such as Rome and Florence can be reached in about 1.5 hour by car or train.
