EDS - SPARK DETECTORS - GENERAL NOTES The spark detectors are electronic devices suitable for the detection of sparks in the pipes or transport ducts of conbustible material of different nature (sawdust, flour, metal powders, etc.), to a collection Silos. During the transport phase may happen that, mixed with the material to be transported, is transported also some spark produced upstream during the processing phases. If this spark is not detected and neutralized very quickly because, once inside the Silos, may cause fire and even the explosion of the same. Thus the detection of the spark performed in a precise and timely manner, can be exploited to avoid major damage and dangers to people and things, and consequently, increase the level of safety. The composition of a spark detection system comprises the following elements: 1 - spark detection system 1 - extinguishing system Spark The spark detection system includes: 1 - spark detector - model EV-395 (IP67) or SCL-01 (Ex-d ATEX) 1 - control panel - model EV-521 (for 2 spark detectors) or SCU-04 (for 4 spark detectors) The shutdown system includes: 1 - solenoid - VL-34-24 1 - pressure or flow - PRS-14-55 1 - spray nozzle - SP14-12-34 etc. depending on the diameter of the pipe 1 - shutter or flow deviation prior to placing in Silos collection - model EDS-SRG-ET In the following pages lists the various schemes relating to spark detection systems. If the diameter of the pipes within which the fluid flows to explore has a diameter less than 50 cm, is sufficient 1 spark detector for exploring the total section of the pipe. If the diameter of the pipe has a diameter greater than 50 cm, to avoid dead zones not explored by the detector, must be used two detectors installed diametrically opposed. If the system is to be achieved the maximum safety, in addition to a first section detection and extinguishing, can be installed downstream, a second detection and extinguishing section. In this case the first section has the task of detecting and switch off the spark, while the second has the task of verifying the effective extinction of the spark, and, if this has not happened, proceed to a second and final detection and extinguishing attempt. In addition to these elements are also useful: 1 - shutter or flow deviation prior to placing in Silos collection 1 - temperature detector inside the silos in Ex-d ATEX to give an alarm if the temperature exceeds a predetermined limit within the Silos To reach the maximum of the technical characteristics and safety, the spark detectors EDS must be controlled by special control panels EV-521 or SCL-04 designed specifically for these detectors. Spark detectors are extremely fast, because they have to detect a spark that travels at speeds up to 100 Km / h. The operating time of the system that is the sum of the times of detection, signal processing, excitation of the relay output, activation of the extinguishing system, it must be extremely short and can be realized only with the control panels with particular characteristics such as EV-521 and SCU-04. 2

During the transporting phase, a spark, produced in the previous manifacturing stages, can be transported mixed with the materials. If this spark is not detected and neutralized very quickly, once it arrives inside the silo, it can cause a fire or an explosion. So the precise and quick detection of the spark, can be used to prevent great damages and dangers to both people and things and consequently to elevate the security level of the installation. The EV395 detector is able to reveal sparks that cross its viewing range even if they have a great velocity (up to 100 km/h). The detector is equipped with an optical head sensible to infrared radiation, that has a viewing range of more than 90 degrees (solid angle) and a suitable electronic circuit that provides the amplification and managing of the signal. When the EV395 detector intercepts a spark it provides the powering of a relay suitable to switch on optical and acoustic alarms. Moreover a fire extinguishing system ( splinker ) can be activated. For the former function it is suggested to use our EV 521 control unit that has a great using flexibility. If the pipes have a large diameter (over 0,5 m.) several EV395 detectors can be used to obtain a better security level. If a water spraying automatic extinguishing system is also present,the spark extinguishing can be verified.if the transporting pipe has not a cylindric shape, for example squared or rectangular, it can be necessary to use two opposed detectors, to avoid dead zones external to the viewing range of the detector, The detector's box is made of fusion light alloy with IP67 protection, and so the internal electronics are protected from dust, shocks and from ambient conditions, that can be also corrosive, permitting to use the detector outdoor for a long time without any problem. The maintenance of this detector is very simple and not frequently required. EV395 is supplied complete with mounting brackets. The execution is explosion proof EX-d IIC-T6 - ATEX certified. So the detector is suitable to be installed in classified environments where the installations must be explosion proof. During the transporting phase, a spark, produced in the previous manifacturing stages, can be transported mixed with the materials. If this spark is not detected and neutralized very quickly, once it arrives inside the silo, it can cause a fire or an explosion. So the precise and quick detection of the spark, can be used to prevent great damages and dangers to both people and things and consequently to elevate the security level of the environment. The SCL01 detector is able to reveal sparks that cross its viewing range even if they have a great velocity (up to 100 km/h). EV521 Spark Detection Control Unit FEATURES suitable to control two EV395 spark detectors temporized command for 4 output relays for the following functions: command 1 or 2 electrovalves feeding water spraying nozzles for spark extinguishing command acoustic and visual alarms automatic activation of shutters to block the accumulation of materials in a silo verification of electrovalves opening using pressure meters in the hydraulic circuit ADVANTAGES simple and easy installation provided with all the elements necessary for a spark detection system the box transparent plastic door, allows the visualization of the leds and the control elements, and protects the unit from tampering provided with an internal stabilized power supplier In spark detection systems, devices other than the specific detector are normally required. Usually these additional devices allow the detected sparks extinguishing, the acoustic signalling of alarms, the control of extinguishing systems and the eventual block of the silo material feeding system. The operations described above are carried on by the EV521 Control Unit in very short times, with precision, in the right sequence and so definitely in the best way. The EV521 Control Unit has been designed to be used together with our EV395 Spark Detectors. It can control up to two EV395 detectors. This unit automatizes all the operations and so allows to use the EV395 Spark Detectors in a simple and reliable way. Moreover the EV521 Control Unit avoids the necessity to buy a lot of devices coming from different manifacturers and so the problem of coupling this eterogenous devices. The EV521 installation is very simple and can be carried out in a short time. FUNCTIONING The typical installation of a spark detection system in a silo feeding pipe consists at least of: 1 spark detector 1 electrovalve to open/close the water feeding 1 water spraying nozzle (sprinkler head) for spark extinguishing 1 visual/acoustic signalling unit For the maximum safety it is good to double all the elements above described to obtain the following result: the first section performs the detecting and the extinguishing the second allows the final control and if the spark is not extinguished yet, executes the extinguishing and the system block The example of page 2 is about a complete installation with two EV395 and an EV521 Control Unit. The EV521 functioning mode is the following: it is connected with the two EV395 detectors by means of the supplied terminal board, so that it can supply the detectors with power and receive the signals from them. if an alarm signal is sent from the first spark detector the EV521 powers the internal relays R1 and R2. R1 activates the VL1 electrovalve. The VL1 opening causes, by means of the SS1 nozzle (sprinkler head), an extinguishing water spray in the pipe. The spraying time lenght is regulated by an internal timer (time adjustable between 0-30 sec.). the second relay R2 commands the acoustic(warning siren) and visual(warning flasher) if the second spark detector gives out an alarm, the EV 521 powers R3 and R4 relays. R3 activates the VL2 electrovalve that commands the SS2 extuinguishing sprinkler head. The R4 relay will be eventually useful to command the pipe shutter closing. The SS1 and SS2 pressure meters are mounted on both the feeding pipes for the SS1 and SS2 nozzles. The meter s outputs are used to command the onboard memory system with signalling led of the EV521 Control Unit. In this way a confirmation of the sprinkler heads intervention is provided. 7
