Dillon Ripley Center, the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, the National Museum of African Art, and the three related entry pavilions above grade. The Haupt Garden is considered the setting for the Quadrangle and its related pavilions. It is anticipated that the expanded and amended National Mall Historic District will be accepted by the National Register of Historic Places by the end of this year. The Great Hall will be the primary information center with amenities located on the lower level. Current Castle Great Hall Visitor Center will be improved and remain after restoration June 9, 2015 80

Smithsonian Institution You can South add Mall text Campus hear Master for Plan the header from the slide master Alternatives Considered but Dismissed A & I as a Permanent Visitor Center A&I is a major building asset for the Smithsonian. It is currently being improved to support special events and limited public uses in the Spring of 2016. The building will serve as a temporary Visitors Center when the Castle is undergoing restoration. June 9, 2015 81

Smithsonian Institution You can South add Mall text Campus hear Master for Plan the header from the slide master Alternatives Considered but Dismissed Demolition of Castle basement and extensive removal of walls The Castle basement spaces have their own historic character, as seen in these historic images. Dismissed concept When the Castle is restored and reinforced to accommodate seismic retrofit, the treatment used will minimize removal of historic materials and maximize retention of historic character. Historic images of the Castle basement. Currently, these spaces are impacted by extensive piping and utility runs in the ceilings and numerous mechanical and electrical rooms. June 9, 2015 82
