In reality standards in Passive Fire Protection can vary significantly

The responsibility is yours Would you allow an unqualified plumber to work in your building? To become a qualified plumber you will need an industry recognised qualification at level 2 or 3. The main qualifications needed to become a qualified plumber are: Level 2/3 Diploma Plumbing and Heating Level 2/3 Diploma Installing and Maintaining Domestic Heating Systems.

The responsibility is yours Would you allow an unqualified electrician to work in your building? The responsibility is yours Passive Fire Protection I need to undertake a passive fire protection refurbishment programme. How do I select appropriate products and installers?

3 rd Party Certification Which is why 3rd Party Certification is important

3 rd Party Certification Quality Assurance /Third Party Certification What is it? Supporting evidence of the quality of the PRODUCT or SERVICE for Architect, Specifier, Contractor, Building Control Authority, End-user, RESPONSIBLE PERSON and any other stakeholder Assures the quality of the product or service INDEPENDENTLY of the supplier Encouraged by Authorities such as DCLG (AD-B), Scottish Government, AI, LABC, CFOA etc. Encouraged by all fire protection trade associations Creates a level playing field for installers Protection against claims

3rd Party Certification For the last decade all ASFP Contractors are required to gain 3 rd Party Certification from a UKAS accredited Certification Body as a mandatory requirement of entry to and membership of the ASFP

3rd Party Certification Why is 3rd Party Certification Important? To avoid this!

3rd Party Certification Why is 3rd Party Certification Important? And ensure that if this happens!

3rd Party Certification Why is 3rd Party Certification Important? This is the result!

3rd Party Certification Why is 3rd Party Certification Important? This is the result! Without fire barriers With fire barriers

ASFP Industry Training Initiatives

ASFP Industry Training Initiatives ASFP Industry Wide Awareness Training Initiative: Purpose To develop a nationally recognised industry training scheme for passive fire protection The scheme aims to Up-skill contractors involved in the installation of passive fire protection Improve the knowledge base of those involved in the design, supply, inspection and maintenance of passive fire protection

ASFP Industry Training Initiatives ASFP Industry Wide Awareness Training Initiative: It targets three main occupational groups across the sector, including: New entrants to the specialist contractor workforce Contractors within allied specialist trades and within the distribution supply chain Other groups that need a greater understanding of PFP, such as site supervisors, inspectors of fire systems, and building control officers

ASFP Industry Training Initiatives ASFP Industry Wide Awareness Training Initiative: In addition the core module is ideally suited to anyone wishing to gain a fundamental understanding of the nature and correct use of passive fire protection in association with other essential fire protection systems

ASFP Industry Training Initiatives Why is this initiative so essential? The methodology for the design and construction of buildings is changing to meet with government requirements in terms of carbon reduction and environmental sustainability Growth in the use of MMC. The importance of correctly specified and installed PFP measures in this construction type cannot be underestimated Clear disconnect in knowledge within supply chain practice in relation to required competence in the use, installation, and regulatory understanding of all aspects of the PFP process

ASFP Industry Training Initiatives ASFP Industry Wide Awareness Training Initiative: Requirement for all learners Underpinning knowledge 6 specific areas of study Core module Create level playing field Follow-on modules Undertake those to suit training need Remove need for repetition Cost effective Basis for wider market offering

ASFP Industry Training Initiatives Core Module Legislation, fire risk assessment, Building regulations and Standards Codes of Practice Fire science Product and Contractor 3 rd Party Certification Fire protection measures: Passive, Active & Signage systems Passive systems Structural protection; non reactive, intumescent, cladding Fire stopping and fire seals, cavity barriers Fire resistant ducting and dampers; FR boarded systems, FR cladding systems Fire retardant coatings Partitioning systems, ceiling systems and elements of construction Compartmentation & FR substrates Fire doors & glazing; Fusible link doors and shutters Active systems Fire detection & alarm systems Portable fire extinguishers, fixed suppression systems /sprinklers Emergency lighting Fire engineering design Inspection processes Developing inspection test plans and understanding test reports
