REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL (RFP) Title Outdoor Sculpture of Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne Organization Society of the Sacred Heart Closing Date January 10, 2017 Location Jubilee Prayer Garden at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis 4431 Lindell Blvd. St. Louis, MO 63108 Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne Sculpture The Society of the Sacred Heart is seeking to commission a qualified artist to create a permanent outdoor artwork for the Jubilee Prayer Garden at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis. The garden is located between the church and the rectory. It currently has four other sculptures made of various materials. The winning artist will be awarded a paid contract and will be responsible for the creation and installation (in conjunction with the archdiocese representative) of the final work. The Society of the Sacred Heart is preparing for a bicentennial celebration of its first missionary sister. Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne came to St. Charles, Missouri, from France and founded the first free school west of the Mississippi and in the area now known as the Archdiocese of St. Louis in September 1818. She dreamed of bringing the Gospel to the native peoples in America. She is often depicted sitting with a map on her lap, representing her dream of traveling to the New World. The theme of the bicentennial is Crossing Frontiers. Various images of Philippine, including those showing her seated, are posted above and on the bicentennial website: https://rscj.org/bicentennial2018/image-gallery For information about Philippine: https://rscj.org/bicentennial2018 Society of the Sacred Heart Request for Proposals Philippine Sculpture 1
Theme and Location The artist is asked to design a seated sculpture of Philippine with a map on her lap. Philippine should be depicted in her mid-40s, her age when she left France to come to America. Note: The only actual photo we have of Philippine is when she was deceased at age 83. But we have many artists interpretations of her. The sculpture will be placed in the north end of the garden, near the parking lot. There is a trellis there now that helps to separate the garden from the parking lot. This trellis was once used inside the cathedral and will stay as a backdrop to the sculpture. The garden around this area will be replanted. Two benches are currently at this location, which can be moved or replaced. The provided footprint for the base of the sculpture is approximately 4 deep x 9 wide. Work in any medium will be considered but the medium must be weather resistant and designed to last in a permanent outdoor site. The sculpture does not have to be life sized, but we would like Philippine to be close to eye-level with those seated on the benches around her. She could be seated in a chair or on a bench or placed on a short pedestal. However, we do not want people to be able to sit on her lap or to have children placed on her lap. Consideration will be needed for how the base of the sculpture will be created and supported. Photos of the other sculptures in the garden are included on the last page of this RFP. The color of the base of the sculpture should complement the other sculptures black marble. We Society of the Sacred Heart Request for Proposals Philippine Sculpture 2
do not anticipate that donation information will be inscribed on this base. If needed, a donor plaque will be installed next to the sculpture.
