REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL (RFP) Title Outdoor Sculpture of Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne Organization Society of the Sacred Heart Closing Date January 10, 2017 Location Jubilee Prayer Garden at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis 4431 Lindell Blvd. St. Louis, MO 63108 Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne Sculpture The Society of the Sacred Heart is seeking to commission a qualified artist to create a permanent outdoor artwork for the Jubilee Prayer Garden at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis. The garden is located between the church and the rectory. It currently has four other sculptures made of various materials. The winning artist will be awarded a paid contract and will be responsible for the creation and installation (in conjunction with the archdiocese representative) of the final work. The Society of the Sacred Heart is preparing for a bicentennial celebration of its first missionary sister. Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne came to St. Charles, Missouri, from France and founded the first free school west of the Mississippi and in the area now known as the Archdiocese of St. Louis in September 1818. She dreamed of bringing the Gospel to the native peoples in America. She is often depicted sitting with a map on her lap, representing her dream of traveling to the New World. The theme of the bicentennial is Crossing Frontiers. Various images of Philippine, including those showing her seated, are posted above and on the bicentennial website: https://rscj.org/bicentennial2018/image-gallery For information about Philippine: https://rscj.org/bicentennial2018 Society of the Sacred Heart Request for Proposals Philippine Sculpture 1

Theme and Location The artist is asked to design a seated sculpture of Philippine with a map on her lap. Philippine should be depicted in her mid-40s, her age when she left France to come to America. Note: The only actual photo we have of Philippine is when she was deceased at age 83. But we have many artists interpretations of her. The sculpture will be placed in the north end of the garden, near the parking lot. There is a trellis there now that helps to separate the garden from the parking lot. This trellis was once used inside the cathedral and will stay as a backdrop to the sculpture. The garden around this area will be replanted. Two benches are currently at this location, which can be moved or replaced. The provided footprint for the base of the sculpture is approximately 4 deep x 9 wide. Work in any medium will be considered but the medium must be weather resistant and designed to last in a permanent outdoor site. The sculpture does not have to be life sized, but we would like Philippine to be close to eye-level with those seated on the benches around her. She could be seated in a chair or on a bench or placed on a short pedestal. However, we do not want people to be able to sit on her lap or to have children placed on her lap. Consideration will be needed for how the base of the sculpture will be created and supported. Photos of the other sculptures in the garden are included on the last page of this RFP. The color of the base of the sculpture should complement the other sculptures black marble. We Society of the Sacred Heart Request for Proposals Philippine Sculpture 2

do not anticipate that donation information will be inscribed on this base. If needed, a donor plaque will be installed next to the sculpture. Proposal Submission Requirements To be considered for the project, please submit the following: A brief one-page narrative description of the concept for the work. Include in the narrative how the sculpture will fit within the proposed location, scale, types of materials and colors. Details should be provided on how the artist recommends installation will be handled. (Final plans will be made with the archdiocese representative.) Visual representation of the sculpture in any of the following formats: o colored graphic or artist illustration depicting the project o a model of the proposal o electronic image A proposed budget. The proposed budget should include all expenses except site preparation, lighting and landscaping. The artist should be clear if there are any exclusions to the budget proposal submitted. A current resume including past experience in public art with no more than 10 jpg images of representative works or a link to the artist s website/online photo gallery. Three references with contact names, telephone numbers and addresses from previous project managers. Budget The total budget for the project will be determined after bids are received. This is a privately funded project. Artists need to submit a budget that covers the direct cost of the artwork, design fees, all labor and materials, costs of fabrication, transportation, travel, permits, documentation and professional liability and other related costs. Installation costs for proper base, landscaping and lighting will be the responsibility of the Society of the Sacred Heart. Selection Applications will be reviewed by the bicentennial sculpture committee. Criteria used by the committee include: Attention to the chosen theme How well the message is communicated in the work The potential of the work to enhance and expand the public s knowledge of Philippine Experience with similar projects Commitment to stated timeline Demonstrated ability to maintain projects within budget and schedule Special attention will be given to durability, workmanship, maintenance requirements, protection against vandalism and timelessness of the work The committee will review the submissions and invite a short list of two or three semi-finalists to be interviewed. Each semifinalist will be awarded a $1,500 stipend for development of a Society of the Sacred Heart Request for Proposals Philippine Sculpture 3

proposal, travel and overnight accommodations, if necessary, for presentation to the sculpture committee. The committee will award the final contract based on its evaluation of the artwork proposal, experience of artist and references. The semi-finalist artists will be selected to submit the following information. The final artist will be selected from these requirements. Please submit the following: Proposed concept 3D digital model or maquette. Model must include a scaled plan of the proposed location and a plan dimensioned elevation of the concept. Model must also include perspectives of the concept, information regarding materials, weights, colors and any other relevant details. Site plan. Plan must include perspective drawing between artwork and sidewalk or other public space, and show all design features to create a space with foreground and backdrop for artwork. Site plan shall also show pedestrian access to the artwork. Project maintenance instructions. The committee reserves the right to withhold the commission award if it should not find a satisfactory artwork. All submitted complete applications will be reviewed. Applications not meeting the submission guidelines will not be considered. The committee reserves the right to reject any or all application and proposals. The Society of the Sacred Heart and the Archdiocese of Saint Louis reserve the right to photograph and use accepted work for documentation, on our websites, for publicity and/or catalog purposes. Estimated Timeline Proposal materials must be received by: January 10, 2017 Review of applications: January 20, 2017 Selection and notification of semifinalists: January 30, 2017 Final selection: March 1, 2017 Art installed in garden by June 2018 Forward all questions and submissions to: Linda Behrens Bicentennial Communications Society of the Sacred Heart 4120 Forest Park Ave. St. Louis, MO 63108 lbehrens@rscj.org 314-880-0557 Society of the Sacred Heart Request for Proposals Philippine Sculpture 4
