Research Overview We at HE&W carry out contract- and academic-based research and development activities on behalf of our clientele. Our team has PhD-level training with some of the leading academic research institutions in the world, and maintains active contact with these bodies. We also have contact with developers of analysis, modelling and design software packages used in industry-leading research today. Why We Do It Three key phenomena fuel the global demand for more sustainable and holistic approaches to development and natural resource management. These are: population growth, urban expansion and climate change. The present and projected adverse effects of these on critical environmental and hydrological systems include: increased demand for water for domestic, commercial, industrial and agricultural use; prolonged periods of drought; increased storm intensity, impermeable area and therefore flooding; increased stormwater contamination; increased domestic, commercial and industrial sewage effluent; and increased receiving environment and water contamination. In the developing world in particular, these problems are further exacerbated by inadequate systems and infrastructure, and a lack of suitably qualified professionals devoted to addressing and solving them. Our research activities are driven by a desire to understand how these phenomena operate in a Caribbean context, as well as to pre-empt changes in their behaviour over time. In this way we can better mitigate and adapt to their effects through conscientious, research-based planning. We are also driven by a desire to contribute to the development and implementation of novel practices, systems and infrastructure for environmental and water management in the region; as well as to the professionals who research, design and implement them. 11

Research and Development Services Our main research and development areas of interest are as follows: Sustainable Drainage Systems performance, configuration and optimisation; Flood and hydrological research; Stormwater harvesting system design and optimisation; Green roof system hydraulic and water quality performance, particularly in tropical and sub-tropical climates; Green roof plant and substrate performance and total system optimisation for tropical and sub-tropical climates; Pervious pavement system design and optimisation, and hydraulic and water quality performance; The development and optimisation of structures, systems and components for: Stormwater and urban drainage management; Agricultural irrigation and drainage management; Rainwater harvesting; Stormwater harvesting and distribution; Drinking water distribution and supply; Water storage; Flood control and defence; and Wastewater management and treatment; The development and optimisation of systems, processes and components for: Rainwater and stormwater treatment for potable and nonpotable reuse; Wastewater treatment for non-potable reuse; Drinking water treatment; and Stormwater quality remediation for receiving environment and water protection, including terrestrial and aquatic habitat, farmlands, aquifers, rivers and the coastal zone; The development of environmental and water engineering best practices for the Caribbean region; Plan and framework development for the management of the environment and water, including: land, water resources, marine environments, stormwater, and solid and liquid waste; and 12
