November 2018 Volume 4 Issue 11 The Orchid Oracle Presidents Message Fellow Orchid Lovers, Weyman is hard at work preparing for this month s auction. He puts a great deal of time and effort into searching for and acquiring the best specimens for the lowest prices. This allows all members to walk away with great bargains and in turn helps support the JTOS Society. Come one come all (friends too) and have a fun filled evening. Inside This Newsletter Task for November Pg 2 November Program Pg 3 Upcoming Events Pg 4 JTOS Directory Pg 5 JTOS Calendar Pg 6 I want to thank all members for promoting the Society and because of your effort, to this date, we have grown by more than 30% this past year. Keep up the good work! Cherie has graciously volunteered to open her house to assemble the orchid baskets for our annual Christmas Party. Please contact any board member to see if any more hands are needed. Finally, we are in DESPERATE need for someone to step up and take over the publishing of the JTOS Newsletter. Cheryl will help, tutor, and do whatever she can to make a smooth transition. The newsletter is vital part of our "Society" and must continue. See you at the auction! Pa ge 2 I would like to personally thank the members of JTOS who contributed plants to the Team Solly Benefit Orchid Auction held at my home on Oct. 20th. Dotty Wisch, Sue Gumbus, and Patt Lindsey thank you for the plants you contributed to this effort... And a hearty thank you for those members who came out and supported the effort. You all helped in raising a total of $9,824 in one day for a very deserving couple whose lives have been devastated by their battle with cancer. Jim and Alexis Solly Tasks for November By Dr. Martin Motes Excerpted: Florida Orchid Growing Month by Month 1. Winter is coming. Prepare for the cold. Reduce fertilizer. 2. Apply extra Potassium and Magnesium. 3. Segregate dormant genera in a bright, dry area. 4. Repot plants after flowering. 5. Groom plants and flower spikes for holiday display. The late warmth should not lull us into a false sense of security. Winter can surprise us any time in November. We must be sure that our plants are protected from west and north winds. Having made those preparations, we will be set to enjoy the cool weather and so will our plants.
