American Institute of Architects New Hampshire Chapter 2011-2012 High School Design Competition Program Educational Objectives To increase your awareness of the relationships between space, human scale and function. To gain experience in recognizing the various challenges in planning and designing indoor and outdoor spaces for specific uses. To exercise your analytical abilities and creativity in solving the problems you have defined. To gain experience in communicating your planning and design ideas using scale drawings and models. Participation Requirements Every participant must be a current high school student in the state of New Hampshire or any high school student who is a resident of New Hampshire. Students may work individually or in teams. Teams may not consist of more than three students. Registration Teachers must register all participating students by January 27, 2012 with the attached form. Program Imagine that the most exhilarating sporting event in the world today, the 34 th America s Cup, will be held in Portsmouth in 2013. This year s AIANH Competition will be to design the America s Cup Youth Education Pavilion. This highly visible pavilion will serve to tell the stories of the America s Cup, the history of sailing, and introduce local youth to sailing. The designer(s) must clearly express how their pavilion is distinctive, yet cohesive with the surrounding environment. AIANH Chapter requires that each entry create a vocabulary which strongly identifies social responsibility and environmental concerns for the Portsmouth Bay Area. Sustainable Youth Education Pavilion A fundamental goal of this building is to embrace sustainability. In order to reduce the overall inpact of the building in the environment, the pavilion will integrate innovative green building stratagies such as: increase energy efficiency water efficiency, use renewable energy materials which will reduce consumption, pollution and waste Educate and Promote Innovations in Sustainable Living

The building should implement natural day lighting, smart shading systems and water conservation. This highly sustainable pavilion and site should showcase green building stratagies used in sustainable architecure. There is no pre-determined height, however the height must respect the surrounding environment as well as complement the buildings function and design. Interior Spaces: Entry portal (350 sq. ft.): This space serves as a gateway into the building and must be easily visible with a clear purpose. An interior lobby will provide space for a display wall that will feature information about current and upcoming events for the America s Cup races in general as well as special events being held in the pavilion. Information/staff desk (125 sq. ft.): Space for two staff members to welcome visitors and direct them to appropriate resources in the pavilion. Exhibit of local youth in sailing: A multimedia exhibition space with information on local opportunities for youth in sailing around the Portsmouth Bay Area. Staff Offices (450 sq. ft): Main director office and cubicles for a least two support staff. Classroom (600 sq. ft.): Space for classes in aspects of sailing that can be taught on dry land including navigation, ropes and knots, Bay Area waters, tides, currents, etc. Restrooms (200 sq. ft.): Accessible Men s and Women s restroom. One restroom for each gender near the entry portal. Utility Closet (100 sq. ft.): Office supplies, janitorial equipment. Exhibit of the History of the America s Cup (1,100 sq. ft.): A large hall housing a series of multimedia and museum case exhibits that illustrate the past, present and future of the America s Cup Race. Café (325 sq. ft.): This organic café will serve food and drinks from local farms to the public as well as organized events. This space must have direct access to the exterior and seating should be provided at the outdoor plaza. Public Circulation: Interior circulation, corridors. Exterior Spaces: Outdoor Plaza: This exterior space is intended to provide a natural amphitheater as well as opportunities for viewing the races, both life and on large video screens around the plaza. Souvenir booths and other feature maybe included, but they need to compliment the Hi-Tech nature of the 34 th America s Cup Race.

Submission Requirements Design Boards should be 20 x 36 on ¼ inch core and include the following: (see sample presentation layouts, attached) o One board to include design sketches, design process and inspiration information o Site plan o Floor plan o Exterior and interior elevations o Building sections o Exterior and/or interior perspective optional (see sample presentation layout) 1/8 Scale model Brief project narration Compose a thoughtful and concise narrative (approximately 150 words) describing your building design. This can include but not limited to: o The main ideas and goals behind your design o How the building is organized o How you envision people occupying the building Timeline (specific dates to follow) April 2012 May 2012 Entries are due at the AIANH office by April 27, 2012, 2 pm. Winners of the AIANH High School Design Competition will be invited to the annual AIANH-Plan NH Special Awards Evening at the end of May at which projects will be on display and awards will be presented.
