GREEN ROOFS: TYPES INTENSIVE GREEN ROOF MSCP ROOF GARDEN @ KALLANG WHAMPOA DEW EXTENSIVE GREEN ROOF FOOD CANOPY @ SINGAPORE BOTANIC GARDENS Source: Colours Design Workshop Intensive/ high profile green roofs are roof gardens created for people access, usually for recreational purposes. They have a higher planting medium depth to hold a large variety of plants, and also contain paths, small structures and other elements. Extensive/low profile green roofs are best suited to roofs which are not accessible to people (except for maintenance). They have a shallow planting medium depth which limits the type of plants that can be grown on them.

GREEN ROOF: EDGE TREATMENT Planters at the edges- Maintenance and Safety Planters at the roof edges should not be a safety issue for users or maintenance personnel. Maintenance pathways, safety hook lines and other elements should be catered for in the design.

GREEN ROOF: STRUCTURAL CONSIDERATION Loading capacity and design load of roof, Waterproofing, Drainage ROOF GARDEN MSCP ROOF GARDEN @ KALLANG WHAMPOA DEW Bulk trees/ palms/ shrubs should be strategically located and preferably positioned over structural members such as columns. The design should transfer tree loads optimally through the building, and safely to the ground. A Professional Engineer (PE) should be engaged to verify the loading capacity of the roof to certify that it can support the additional loads from the rooftop greenery systems, other relevant landscaping materials and wet load of the system during heavy rainfall, and that the structural integrity of the roof/ wall structure is not compromised. WATERPROOFING & DRAINAGE Drainage systems on roof gardens should be adequately designed with proper gradients to prevent water stagnation and mosquito breading. There should also be a safe and permanent access to roofs for regular inspection and maintenance.
