Please save for future reference Guam Rolls Out Cleaner and Greener Your New Trash Collection Service Plus, tips for recycling and reducing waste Your trash collection day: Guam Solid Waste Management Division www.guamsolidwastereceiver.org

Introducing your new trash collection service and cart Thank you for registering for weekly trash collection service from the Solid Waste Management Division. And thank you for helping Guam become cleaner and greener! In about a week, a Solid Waste Management Division crew will deliver to your residence a new 95-gallon rolling cart. Beginning the week after you receive your cart, place your bagged trash in the cart and roll it to the curb or set-out location 12 hours before your collection day. Please remove it no later than 12 hours after collection. With your covered cart, there is no longer a need for cages or platforms for your trash containers. Please remove them. Your cart will come with handling instructions. It will be covered to keep trash odors in and animals out. It also will have a wide handle as well as a foot tilt area to make it easy to move around. Since your cart will be lifted by a mechanical device on the collection truck, there will be less risk of injury for collection crews. Important information about your cart Your trash cart is the property of the Solid Waste Management Division. If you move or discontinue collection service, the cart must be returned to the Solid Waste Management Division. Please call Customer Service at 671-646-3111 to arrange for pick up. 2

Making Guam Cleaner and Greener Together, we can keep Guam beautiful, clean and green! Please follow the instructions below: What goes in your cart Household trash only For example, consumer packaging, soiled paper, rags, paper towels, tissues, chicken and meat bones. Be sure to bag all trash before putting it in your cart! Loose trash is more difficult to collect. There is no need to line the cart. Only household trash that is contained in your cart will be collected. We will no longer pick up trash in cages or on platforms. If you have excess trash During holidays and special occasions, you may have more trash than usual. When you register for trash collection service, you will receive four FREE trash tags to put on bags of extra trash that won t fit in your cart. Collectors will pick up these trash bags as long as they have trash tags. If you need more trash tags, you can purchase them at any Solid Waste Management Division staffed facility. Any bag of trash left outside the cart without this tag will not be collected. Bag household trash before placing it in your trash cart. Up to three full 30-gallon trash bags will fit. Some things DO NOT go in your cart In order to extend the life of the Ordot Dump while the new landfill is being built, the items listed on the next page are now banned from disposal in your cart. Collectors will not take these banned items. Trash bags left outside the cart need a trash tag. 3

How to Shrink Your Trash Waste reduction and recycling tips The best way to reduce your trash plus save valuable space at the Ordot Dump and help the environment is not to create waste in the first place! Here are several ways you can minimize waste at home. 1. Prevent waste in your yard Grass and yard trimmings make up about 40 percent of Guam s waste at the Ordot Dump. But these materials can be recycled right in your yard by grasscycling and composting. Grass clippings are now banned from trash collection. Grasscycling reduces waste and can improve your lawn. You can compost yard trimmings in a simple pile or wooden corral. If you add vegetative kitchen scraps to your pile, it s best to contain your pile in a covered compost bin to deter animals. Grasscycling Just leave the grass clippings on your lawn when you mow! Grasscycling helps create a healthier and more durable lawn, you save money on fertilizers, and bags of grass clippings won t end up in the Ordot Dump. Grasscycling returns important nutrients to the soil, holds moisture, and inhibits weed growth. Research shows that grasscycling does not cause thatch. Mow often enough so grass clippings are one inch or less. Always mow when the grass is dry so clippings won t form clumps. And be sure to keep your mower blades sharp. For more information about grasscycling, please visit www.guamsolidwastereceiver.org/gswm-yardwaste.shtml. Composting Composting is a natural process that turns leaves, grass clippings, prunings, and vegetative kitchen scraps into a dark, rich and crumbly substance called humus, an excellent soil supplement. Why send these yard trimmings to the Ordot Dump when they can improve your yard? Just build a good base by placing 6 to 8 inches of twigs or brush on the ground or at the bottom of a compost bin. Add leaves, grass clippings, chopped brush, and other yard trimmings to the pile, moistening them as you mix them in. If you add vegetative kitchen scraps to your pile, it is best to contain your pile in a covered compost bin to deter animals. Make a concave indentation in the center for rainwater. Yard trimmings compost faster if you occasionally stir the pile. In about 6 to 12 months, your compost should be ready to use as a mulch for trees, shrubs or garden beds, mix into the soil, or add to your potting mix for container plants. For more information about composting, please visit: www.guamsolidwastereceiver.org/gswm-yardwaste.shtml. 6

2. Prevent waste with reuse Reuse writing paper and envelopes as scrap paper. Write on both sides of the paper before tossing it out. Reuse grocery bags several times. Use washed plastic jars, coffee cans, dairy tubs, and other containers for storing small items. Donate unwanted furniture and other items to Goodwill Industries Guam and other nonprofit agencies. 3. Prevent waste when you shop Buy items in bulk or buy concentrates to reduce packaging. Limit your purchases of disposable items. Buy products made with recycled content. This supports markets for your recycled items. Bring your own reusable bags when shopping; decline bags for small purchases. Shop at yard sales or secondhand stores. Buy food and other items with little to no packaging. 4. Prevent waste at home Rent, share, or borrow items you don t use often. Repair broken items instead of throwing them away. Donate usable clothing and furniture to a local charity. Limit unsolicited mail by registering with the DirectMail.com National Do Not Mail List. 5. Recycle your glass containers and cardboard The recycling convenience centers at the Dededo, Malojloj and Agat Transfer Stations and the Ordot Dump accept your glass containers (clear, brown and green) and cardboard. Dededo, Malojloj and Agat Transfer Stations Thursday Monday, 9 am to 5 pm Ordot Dump Monday Saturday, 7 am to 3 pm Recycling convenience centers Agat Future Services Bulky waste collection by appointment You will soon be able to arrange an appointment for curbside collection of furniture and white goods (appliances such as washing machines, stoves, dishwashers, refrigerators, hot water tanks, etc.).
