-Hi 6 th Graders! Please follow the directions below to complete your Research Plan Homework. Due Dates: 6B, C, D 9/24 (Sat) 6A, E 9/25 (Sun) STEP 1: Use the template provided to you on pages 2-3 of this homework announcement to write your Research Plan. Replace all the red writing with your own information for your science fair project. (You may need to either copy and paste the black titles into your own word document or re-type it in the same format so it looks like it s in the same layout- since this is a pdf document.) Font should be size 12 and Times New Roman or Arial. *NOTE* make sure you have already edited and made any necessary changes/adjustments to your project (according to my feedback) before you put it in your research plan. Refer to the example on pages 4-7 of this homework announcement (in purple letters) if you would like to get a more concrete example of what your assignment should look like when you re done. STEP 2: Creating the Bibliography Use the 5 sources you saved (the 5 websites you used to find the information you needed to write your research paper) to create your bibliography by entering the information into this website: http://www.citationmachine.net/mla/cite-a-book Follow the prompts and enter the information into the blanks. After you have clicked Create Citation the citation will appear in an orange box under the section titled YOUR BIBLIOGRAPHY. Copy and paste this (as plain text) into your research plan to create ONE of your sources citations in your bibliography. DO THIS FOR ALL 5 SOURCES TO CREATE YOUR BIBLIOGRAPHY. (this will count as it s own grade as well as part of your grade for your research plan) STEP 3: Save the research plan on your computer. STEP 4: Send me an EMAIL (send it to alexandra.daglio@archimedean.org ) with a copy of your research plan either copy/pasted into the body of the email message OR attached to the email ( ). The subject line of the email should include your section, Last name, First name and Science Fair Research Plan as the subject. Example Subject of email: 6A Diaz, Johnny Science Fair Research Plan 1

EXAMPLE EXAMPLE EXAMPLE EXAMPLE EXAMPLE EXAMPLE EXAMPLE EXAMPLE Jimmy Dean 6F 10/6/14 Science Fair Research Plan Topic: How fertilizers affect plant growth Purpose Statement: Which fertilizer will make plants grow taller? Hypothesis: If a lima bean plant is fertilized with Miracle Grow, Plantella and Advanced Garden fertilizers, then the lima bean plant fertilized with Miracle Grow will grow the tallest because Miracle Grow has a higher percentage of nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus which help plants grow. Variables: Independent Variable- the type of fertilizer used (Miracle Grow, Plantella and Advanced Garden fertilizers) Dependent Variable- the height of the lima bean plant (as measured in cm) Controls: A fourth lima bean plant will be grown without the use of fertilizer Materials: 12 50mm small plastic pots 1 25lb bag of Miracle Grow fertilizer (~11kg) 4

1 25lb bag of Plantella fertilizer (~11kg) 1 25lb bag of Advanced Garden fertilizer (~11kg) 1 watering can 12 lima bean seeds 2 25lb bags of potting soil (~11kg) 12 sticky labels 1 permanent marker Water (approximately 170 liters) Procedures: 1. Make sure pots have holes in the bottom to allow the roots to "breathe" and excess water to drain out. 2. Measure equal amounts of soil into each of the pots. 3. Moisten the soil in each pot with the equal amounts of water. 4. With the labels and permanent marker, label three pots with "Miracle Grow," three pots with "Plantella, three pots with Advanced Garden and three pots with no fertilizer. 5. Plant seeds in each pot according to seed packet instructions. 6. Place plants outside in the same area under the sun. 7. Check your plants regularly and water daily. 8. Soil should be kept moist. 9. Water the "no fertilizer" pots with regular water. 10. Water the "Miracle Grow" pots with water mixed with Miracle Grow fertilizer. Water the " Plantella " pots with water mixed with Plantella fertilizer. Water the " Advanced Garden " pots with water mixed with Advanced Garden fertilizer. Follow the fertilizer manufacturer's recommendations for preparing this solution. 5

11. All plants should receive the same amount of liquid at each watering. 12. Keep track of your watering schedule in your lab notebook. 13. At regular intervals, record observations on the growth of the plants (e.g., height, number of leaves on each plant, etc.) in your lab notebook. For information on scientifically measuring plant growth see the Science Buddies How-to page, 6
