Santa Barbara Orchid Estate was founded by Robert J. Chrisman and managed by Paul Gripp when it was established in 1957. Paul purchased SBOE in 1967, retired in 1986, and currently his two children, Parry and Alice, are the owners. SBOE is reputed to be one of the world's foremost collectors and propagators of orchid species and hybrids, and they specialize in varieties which are temperature tolerant for growing out of doors. All around the globe they are known for their lovely grounds and friendly service. For those of you who have never been to a meeting highlighting this month s speaker, you are in for a real treat. When Paul Gripp comes to town he fills our meeting hall with the most amazing display of beautiful orchids in full bloom. And then he walks around, from table to table, and tells us all about each and every one of them. He has tantalizing tales and generally finds amusing details and comments at every turn of the meeting. He even brings books to show us possible future acquisitions and to help further our knowledge on this beautiful and diverse plant family. His topic this month is Summer Blooming Orchids. Paul will be bringing the plants for our Opportunity Table and hopefully. Plan to attend this meeting, you will really enjoy yourself and, I am certain, learn a lot along the way. Plant Opportunity Table The plant table for this month will be provided by Paul (SBOE). So don t forget to get your raffle tickets!. How-To-Session Joe Vargas will continue discussing Mounting Orchids and other Plants, part II. This will be a hands-on session. Joe will bring some plants and mounting material but I would suggest you bring a plant and what you would like it mounted on if you would like to part-take in this session. The session will start promptly at 7:15pm.

SGVOH Annual Orchid Auction Our Annual Fundraiser was very organized this year. Much preplanning by our board members and many society volunteers produced a successful undertaking which enriched our treasury. We were quite pleased with such a variety of beautiful hybrids and species donated by vendors and club members. Many plants were in full bloom. A total of forty-five paddles were issued. Vendors donate, not usually out of the goodness of their hearts, but because they see it as an investment in us. They expect that they will get a 'return on investment' by having us make purchases from them. When we make a purchase from a donor vendor, it is essential that we identify ourselves as members of SGVOH and thank them for their donations to the society. Thank you letters were given to vendors that donated and acknowledgement shall be posted on our SGVOH website and listed on the insert in the Bulletin. Remember that a successful auction depends upon an excellent array of plants, strong auctioneers, and man hours of donated time, and interested bidders. We all owe our greatest thanks to our excellent auctioneer, member Peter Lin, and his assistant Michael Gregory. They did an excellent job of insuring that the flow went smoothly and fairly. Prior to the auction itself, we were fortunate to have Lucy Arlotti,, Michael Gregory, Greg Orozco, Kay Hudspeth, and Joe Vargas collect donations from vendors. We would also like to thank member donors for the excellent plants they donated: Lucy Arlotti, Domingo &Sherry Cabrera, Ken Fujimoto, Jim Gomes, Michael Gregory, Kay Hudspeth, Barbara Kovacic, Michael Lightworship, Dick Lundine, Greg Orozco, Gordon Quan, Joe Vargas, and Una Yeh.. Of course at the auction itself, we had a myriad of member-workers doing just about anything and everything possible, from receiving plant donations, registering bidders, logging sales, carting plants everywhere, and the list goes on and on. Thanks to all of you who helped in so many ways. It is hoped that the non-participating society members appreciate these actions and recognize that we always need volunteers in order to keep our society healthy and functioning in a manner that benefits all club members. Thanks to all of you for making our 2011 Auction a SUCCESS. AOS Rep. Jan Pluim O.D. Reps Arboretum Rep. Greg Orozco Huntington Rep. Southland Rep.
